ALZALL-100000- SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BIRMINGHAM AL 330 PM CST MON MAR 9 1991 ...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE OVER ALABAMA TONIGHT AND TUESDAY... ...FOLLOWED BY MUCH COLDER WEATHER TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY... A DEVELOPING LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA IS EXPECTED TO SPREAD RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS ALABAMA TONIGHT AND TUESDAY. MOISTURE HAS BEEN INCREASING ACROSS ALABAMA THIS AFTERNOON. BUT TONIGHT AND TUESDAY THE AIR OVER THE STATE IS EXPECTED TO BECOME SUFFICIENTLY MOIST AND UNSTABLE SUCH THAT SOME THUNDERSTORMS COULD POSSIBLY BECOME SEVERE. AT 320 PM THIS AFTERNOON...SCATTERED STRONG THUNDERSTORMS...SOME SEVERE...HAD ALREADY MOVED INTO NORTHWEST ALABAMA. THUNDERSTORMS WILL INCREASE AS THE WEATHER SYSTEM BECOMES BETTER ORGANIZED TONIGHT AND TUESDAY AND MOVES EASTWARD INTO ALABAMA. SO THE POSSIBILITY FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP IS FORECAST IN ALABAMA TONIGHT AND TUESDAY AND IN SOUTHEAST ALABAMA THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING. NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECASTERS WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE SITUATION VERY CLOSELY. WE ADVISE THAT THAT YOU KEEP IN MIND THE POSSIBILITY OF SEVERE WEATHER WHEN PLANNING YOUR ACTIVITIES TONIGHT AND TUESDAY. IN ADDITION TO THE THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER...A TURN TO MUCH COLDER WEATHER IS EXPECTED TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL FALL INTO THE 20S IN NORTH ALABAMA AND THE 30S IN SOUTH ALABAMA BY WEDNESDAY MORNING. COLDER AIR WILL CONTINUE TO POUR INTO THE STATE WEDNESDAY AND BY THURSDAY MORNING FREEZING TEMPERATURES...MOSTLY IN THE 20S AND LOWER 30S...WILL OCCUR OVER MUCH OF ALABAMA. IT IS TOO SOON TO SAY...BUT IT APPEARS AT THIS TIME THAT ONLY THE COASTAL SECTIONS MAY ESCAPE THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES. DUE TO THE RELATIVELY MILD TEMPERATURES THE PAST FEW WEEKS...MANY TREES AND SHRUBS ARE IN BLOOM OR HAVE DEVELOPED BUDS EARLY. CONSEQUENTLY...PROTECTION OF MUCH OF THIS TENDER GROWTH IN THESE PLANTS FROMF THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES IS RECOMMENDED. AT 430 PM CST SCATTERED STRONG THUNDERSTORMS HAD DEVELOPED OVER NORTH AND WEST ALABAMA WELL AHEAD OF A FRONTAL SYSTEM MOVING TOWARD THE STATE FROM THE WEST. THE AIRMASS OVER ALABAMA WAS RAPIDLY BECOMING UNSTABLE AND SOME THUNDERSTORMS COULD POSSIBLY PRODUCE TORNADOES...DAMAGING WIND...AND LARGE HAIL OVER NORTH AND CENTRAL ALABAMA THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT. WITH FURTHER DESTABILIZATION OF THE AIRMASS OVER ALABAMA...THE POTENTIAL FOR MORE SEVERE WEATHER WILL REMAIN THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY.
