NCEI Storm Data entries that began inside the alert's area while it was in force. Before 2003 the local storm report archive is thin, so this is the record of what happened rather than what was phoned in. Storm Data before 1996 records only tornadoes, thunderstorm wind and hail.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PITTSBURGH PA
1045 AM EDT THU JUL 5 1990

...THUNDERSTORMS WITH STRONG WIND GUSTS AND HEAVY DOWNPOURS ARE
POSSIBLE LATE THIS MORNING AND THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS THE
NORTHERN WEST VIRGINIA PANHANDLE AND SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA...

A LINE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED THIS MORNING AND
EXTENDED FROM DUBOIS THROUGH SLIPPERY ROCK TO NEW CASTLE INTO OHIO. THE
LINE WAS ABOUT 20 MILES WIDE AND WAS MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 25 MILES AN
HOUR. SOME STORMS MAY HAVE STRONG WIND GUSTS AND HAIL PLUS DANGEROUS
LIGHTNING AND HEAVY DOWNPOURS THAT MAY CAUSE FLOODING IN LOW-LYING
PLACES AND AREAS OF POOR DRAINAGE.

THE LINE WILL MOVE THROUGH THE GREATER PITTSBURGH AIRPORT AREA AROUND
1130 AM...THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH AROUND NOON...SOUTHERN ALLEGHENY
COUNTY AROUND 1230 PM...AND THE JOHNSTOWN AREA AROUND 130 PM.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE SKY FOR THREATENING THUNDERSTORMS...AND LISTEN FOR
FORECAST UPDATES AND POSSIBLE WATCHES AND WARNINGS.

ALSO KEEP THESE SAFETY TIPS IN MIND. WHENEVER THUNDERSTORMS
THREATEN...ITS BEST TO TAKE SHELTER INSIDE A STRONG BUILDING AND AWAY
FROM GLASS. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT OUTSIDE...BE AWARE THAT LIGHTNING IS AS
MUCH A HAZARD AS HIGH WIND. AVOID ISOLATED TREES AND METAL OBJECTS.
GO TO LOW SPOTS...CROUCH DOWN AND COVER YOUR HEAD...BUT LOOKOUT FOR
FLOODING FROM HEAVY DOWNPOURS. WHEN FLOODING THREATENS...SEEK HIGHER
GROUND...BUT DONT GO THROUGH ANY FLOOD WATERS TO GET THERE. THATS TRUE
WHETHER YOU ARE DRIVING OR ON FOOT.

TODAYS STRONGER THAN USUAL THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE CAUSED BY A COLD FRONT
SLICING THROUGH THE HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY CURRENTLY OVER THE WESTERN
PENNSYLVANIA REGION. THE GOOD NEWS FOR TONIGHT AND FRIDAY IS THE
COMFORTABLY COOLER AND DRIER AIR BEHIND THIS FRONT.
