In the hours before
Special weather statement, May 29, 4:01 PM CDT, 2 hours 35 minutes before
TXZ019>033-301200- SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR NORTH TEXAS NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX 400 PM CDT TUE MAY 29 1990 THERE IS A HIGH RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE EXTREME WESTERN SECTIONS OF NORTH TEXAS FOR THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT. THIS HIGH RISK AREA IS GENERALLY WEST OF A LINE FROM WICHITA FALLS TO ABILENE. THERE IS ALSO A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WESTERN HALF OF NORTH TEXAS GENERALLY WEST OF A LINE FROM BONHAM TO TEMPLE. AT MID-AFTERNOON... A VERY STRONG UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE TROUGH WAS LOCATED ACROSS EASTERN NEW MEXICO. AT THE SURFACE... THE DRYLINE... A BOUNDARY SEPARATING DRY AIR TO THE WEST FROM MOIST AIR TO THE EAST... WAS LOCATED ACROSS EASTERN NEW MEXICO FROM NEAR CLAYTON INTO FAR WEST TEXAS NEAR WINK TO EAST OF MARFA. STRONG SOUTHEAST SURFACE WINDS WERE PUMPING VERY MOIST AIR INTO WEST AND NORTH TEXAS THIS AFTERNOON. DEWPOINTS WERE IN THE MIDDLE 60S OVER WESTERN SECTIONS OF NORTH TEXAS THIS AFTERNOON AND SHOULD CONTINUE TO RISE. THIS MOISTURE WILL PROVIDE FUEL FOR THE THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT. AFTERNOON HEATING ALONG WITH THE INCREASED MOISTURE HAVE LEFT THE ATMOSPHERE MODERATELY UNSTABLE WITH LIFTED INDICES OF MINUS 4 TO MINUS 8 ACROSS NORTH TEXAS. FURTHER DESTABILIZATION CAN BE EXPECTED AS A STRONG PUNCH OF DRY AIR IN THE MIDDLE LEVELS AND A POOL OF COLD AIR IN THE UPPER LEVELS MOVE ACROSS WEST TEXAS THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO NORTH TEXAS THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT. THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED LATE THIS MORNING ACROSS WESTERN SECTIONS OF WEST TEXAS ALONG THE DRYLINE AND CONTINUED THIS AFTERNOON. THE DRYLINE AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO WESTERN SECTIONS OF NORTH TEXAS LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING AND INTO NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS TONIGHT. THE STRONGER THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE VERY HEAVY RAIN... LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS. THE VERTICAL WIND PROFILE ALSO FAVORS THE POSSIBILITY OF ISOLATED TORNADOES. ONE OTHER COMPLICATING FACTOR IS A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE OVER EAST TEXAS AND LOUISIANA WHICH COULD SLOW THE EASTWARD MOVEMENT OF THE DRYLINE AND THE THUNDERSTORMS. SLOWER-MOVING THUNDERSTORMS COULD PRODUCE VERY HEAVY RAIN WITH ONE TO TWO INCHES EXPECTED AND ISOLATED AMOUNTS TO FOUR INCHES POSSIBLE. STORM SPOTTERS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL WILL WANT TO MONITOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS STORM SITUATION. STORM SPOTTER ACTIVATION WILL BE LIKELY ACROSS THE EXTREME WESTERN SECTIONS OF NORTH TEXAS BY LATE AFTERNOON... ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS LATE THIS EVENING AND EARLY TONIGHT... AND POSSIBILY IN NORTHEAST TEXAS LATE TONIGHT AND DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS.
