SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT 145 PM MDT SUN JUL 09 1989 ...STRONG MICROBURST WINDS POSSIBLE OVER NORTHWEST UTAH... LIGHTNING DETECTION AND SPOTTER REPORTS INDICATE HIGH BASED THUNDERSTORMS ARE DEVELOPING OVER NORTHWEST UTAH THIS AFTERNOON. SINCE THE LOWER ATMOSPHERE CONTINUES QUITE DRY THESE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE LOCAL WIND GUSTS TO OVER 50 MILES PER HOUR. RESIDENTS OF NORTHWEST UTAH SHOULD BE ALERT TO THE POSSIBILITY OF THESE STRONG MICROBURST WINDS FOR THE REST OF THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. IN ADDITION...ANYONE OUTDOORS SHOULD BE CONSCIOUS OF THE THREAT OF KILLER LIGHTNING. LIGHTNING CAUSED FIRES ARE ALSO A DISTINCT POSSIBILITY DUE TO THE DRY VEGETATION IN MANY RURAL AREAS. THUNDERSTORMS ARE DEVELOPING IN OTHER AREAS OF THE STATE AS WELL... BUT THE POTENTIAL FOR STRONG WIND GUSTS IS SLIGHTLY LOWER DUE TO MORE MOIST AIR NEAR THE SURFACE.
