SEVERE WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE COLUMBUS GA 450 PM EDT WED JUN 14 1989 ...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR CHAMBERS COUNTY ALABAMA UNTIL 530 PM EDT. AT 440 PM EDT COLUMBUS WEATHER RADAR INDICATED THUNDERSTORMS JUST NORTH AND NORTHWEST OF COLUMBUS TO NEAR LAFAYETTE ALABAMA. THE THUNDERSTORM THAT CAME OVER COLUMBUS EARLIER HAD BRIEF HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS TO 44 MILES AN HOUR. THESE THUNDERSTORMS WERE MOVING NORTHEAST AT 40 MILES AN HOUR. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAN HAVE WINDS OF 58 MPH OR GREATER. PERSONS IN EAST CENTRAL ALABAMA AND WEST CENTRAL GEORGIA SHOULD REMAIN ALERT TO THE RAPIDLY CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL PRODUCE FREQUENT LIGHTNING...VERY HEAVY RAINFALL...STRONG GUSTY WINDS. ...THUNDERSTORMS OVER NORTHWEST GEORGIA....
NUMEROUS SHOWERS WITH SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED OVER PARTS
OF NORTHWEST GEORGIA DURING THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS.
AT 605 PM RADAR INDICATED A BAND OF THUNDERSTORMS THAT CURVED FROM
COWETA COUNTY ACROSS THE SOUTH PART OF FAYERTE COUTY AND INTO SPAULDING
COUNTY. HAIL WAS POSSIBLE IN A STORM IN FAYETTE COUNTY. THE STORMS WERE
DEVELOPING NORTH TOWARDS THE SOUTH PART OF THE ATLANTA METRO AREA.
ANOTHER CONCENTRATION OF STORMS WERE IN THE EXTREME NORTH AND EXTENDED
FROM BLUE RIDGE IN FANNIN COUNTY SOUTH ACROSS GILMER AND PICKENS
COUNTIES INTO CHEROKEE AND BARTOW COUNTIES. SHOWERS WERE MOVING TOWARDS
THE NORTHEAST AT 30 MPH.
STRONG GUSTY WINDS, SMALL HAIL, AND CONSIDERABLE LIGHTNING CAN BE
EXPECTED AS THESE STORMS AFFECT THE AREA DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS.
