SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ATLANTA GA 1139 AM EDT THU JUN 22 1989 A FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR PARTS OF EXTREME NORTH GEORGIA THIS AFTERNOON. THE WATCH AREA IS NORTH OF A LINE FROM ROME TO DAWSONVILLE TO TOCCOA. THIS INCLUDES THE CITIES OF ROME...DALTON ...CHATSWORTH...BLAIRSVILLE...AND CLAYTON. AT 1135 AM RADAR INDICATED THAT NUMEROUS RAINSHOWERS WITH WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS HAD DEVELOPED OVER NEARLY ALL THE WESTERN PART OF THE WATCH AREA. 0.14 INCHES FELL AT ROME IN ABOUT AN HOUR. THE SHOWERS WERE SHOWING A SLOW EASTWARD MOVEMENT WHICH ADDS TO A QUICK RESOAKING OF ALREADY SATURATED GROUNDS AND PRODUCES A STRONG RUNOFF. PERSONS IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD MAINTAIN AWARENESS OF THIS WEATHER SITUATION. MOTORISTS SHOULD USE CAUTION AS HEAVY DOWNPOURS REDUCE VISIBILITIES AND CREATE WATER PONDING ON ROADWAYS WHICH CAUSES SKIDS. SMALL CREEKS AND STREAMS CAN RISE RAPIDLY UNDER THESE CONDITIONS AND FLASH FLOODING IS POSSIBLE. KNOWN AREAS OF POOR DRAINGAGE OR OTHER FLOOD PRONE LOW LYING REGIONS MIGHT BE AVOIDED IF POSSIBLE...DON'T ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH MOVING WATER OR WATER OF UNKNOWN DEPTH. MANY DEATHS OCCUR EACH pYEAR WHEN PEOPLE TRY TO DRIVE THROUGH SWOLLEN STREAMS AND CREEKS. PERSONS IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD STAY ALERT FOR THE LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION BY LISTENING TO THIS STATION.
