RADAR INDICATED SCATTERED HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS OVER TRAVELERS REST AND IN EXTREME NORTHEAST GREENVILLE COUNTY. ELESEWHERE THROUGHOUT THE UPSTATE COUNTIES THUNDERSTORMS ARE SCATTERED AND COVERAGE HAS INCREASED DURING THE PAST HOUR. PEA SIZE (1/4) INCH HAIL REPORTED WITH GREENVILLE STORMS STORMS WERE MOVING EAST AT 15 TO 20 MPH RESIDENTS SOULD BE ALERT FOR HEAVY DOWNPOURS...STRONG GUSTY WINDS... INTENSE LIGHTNING...AND SMALL HAIL WITH THE PASSAGE OF THESE STORMS. OLIVER/GSP

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHARLOTTE NC 525 PM EDT FRI MAY 1 1987 SHOWERS AND VERY HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE WESTERN CAROLINAS WERE MOVING EAST INTO THE SOUTHERN PIEDMONT AND NORTHERN FOOTHILLS OF NORTH CAROLINA. AT 515 THIS AFTERNOON...CHARLOTTE WEATHER RADAR SHOWED SHOWERS AND VERY HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS OVER ALEXANDER COUNTY OF NORTH CAROLINA JUST NORTH OF HICKORY IN CATAWBA COUNTY. THE PRECIPITATION WAS MOVING TOWARD THE EAST BETWEEN 10 AND 20 MPH. THE SHOWERS AND THUNDER STORMS EXTENDS SOUTH ACROSS BURKE...CLEVELAND AND RUTHERFORD IN NORTH CAROLINA AND TO AROUND GREENVILLE IN SOUTH CAROLINA. THESE VERY HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY SUDDEN VERY HEAVY RAINS...LIGHTNING...AND GUSTY WINDS. SOME HAIL MAY ALSO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR PASSAGE.
