CENTRAL INDIANA PRECIPITATION SUMMARY AND SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INDIANAPOLIS IN 325 PM EST FRI SEP 19 1986 AT 320 PM EST A THUNDERSTORM WITH VERY HEAVY RAIN HAD MOVED INTO NORTH- WEST INDIANA. THE STORM WAS AT 40 MILES SOUTHWEST OF SOUTHBEND NEAR WHEATFIELD IN JASPER COUNTY. THE STORM WAS MOVING EAST AT 25 MILES AN HOUR AND WILL MOVE INTO SOUTHERN STARKE COUNTY BY 4PM EST. PERSONS IN THE PATH OF THIS STORM SHOULD BE PREPARED FROM BLINDING RAIN AND POSSIBLY STRONG GUSTY WIND AND SMALL HAIL. THE STORM WAS PART OF A LARGE AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS..THE LEADING EDGE OF WHICH WAS STRETCHED FROM NORTHERN INDIANA NEAR SOUTH BEND IN EASTCENTRAL ILLINOIS NEAR EFFINGHAM. SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INDIANAPOLIS IN 405 PM EST FRI SEP 19 1986 INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS WERE OVER NORTHWEST INDIANA AT 355 PM. THE STORMS WERE IN A 10 MILE WIDE BAND FROM NEAR SOUTH BEND TO JUST WEST OF LAFAYETTE THEN ALONG THE WABASH RIVER TO 35 MILES NORTH OF TERRE HAUTE. THE MOST INTENSE STORMS WERE ALONG INTERSTATE 74 BETWEEN COVINGTON AND VEEDERSBURG. THE STORMS WERE MOVING EAST AT 25 MILES PER HOUR AND WILL MOVE INTO LAFAYETTE AROUND 430 PM AND LOGANSPORT AND CRAWFORDSVILLE AROUND 5 PM. THE STORMS WILL CONTAIN DANGEROUS LIGHTNING...HEAVY RAINFALL AND STRONG WINDS. MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ALERT FOR LOW VISIBILITIES IN HEAVY RAINFALL. STATE POLICE REPORTED THE VISIBILITY AT WILLIAMSPORT WAS AROUND 100 YARDS JUST BEFORE 5 PM. DS

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INDIANAPOLIS IN 435 PM EST FRI SEP 19 1986 INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS WERE MOVING INTO CENTRAL INDIANA AT 425PM AN AREA OF VERY STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WAS EXTENDED FROM NEAR TERRE HAUTE TO KOKOMO. SOME OF THESE STORMS MAY CONTAIN VERY HEAVY DOWNPOURS..VERY GUSTY WINDS AND INTENSE LIGHTNING. A GUST FRONT WAS INDICATED BY RADAR MOVING AHEAD OF THE STORMS. A GUST FRONT IS A SUDDEN SHIFT AND INCREASE IN WINDSPEEDS THAT OCCURS AHEAD OF SOME THUNDERSTORMS. THIS GUST FRONT WAS MOVING INTO BOONE AND NORTHERN PUTNAM COUNTIES AT 425PM. AS THIS GUST FRONT MOVES EAST WINDS MAY INCREASE QUICKLY TO NEAR 50 MPH. THIS GUST FRONT MAY MOVE THROUGH THE COUNTIES OF HENDRICKS.. MARION AND HAMILTON BETWEEN NOW AND 600PM.
