Alerts in force

An Air Quality Alert is issued by the National Weather Service on behalf of a state or local agency when pollution is expected to reach a level that harms health. An Air Stagnation Advisory means the air will not move enough to clear what is already in it.

The forecaster’s discussion

Written by Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection for Mon Valley Area and filed with AirNow.

Current Conditions: Full sunshine is seen this afternoon. The combination of low humidity, seasonable temperatures in the lower 70s, and light northerly flow just above the surface is leading to good air quality for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone. Here are the forecast details: *** Saturday: A light northerly breeze just above the ground will prevent fog formation early Saturday morning. This will keep air quality in the good range in the morning. A coastal storm just south of New England will bring more clouds into the area during the afternoon with highs in the lower 70s. A light northerly wind will keep air quality good. *** Sunday: Good air quality will continue. A stronger northerly wind is expected, with occasional gusts 20-25 mph at times. This should have a positive impact on air quality. There will be a mix of clouds and sun with temperatures remaining seasonable, in the lower 70s. *** Monday: The coastal storm just south of New England will continue to bring clouds to the area with a northerly breeze. This should keep air quality good with temperatures reaching the lower 70s. *** Extended Forecast: As high pressure centers over the Appalachians Tuesday, winds will turn calm and the air will become still. This may lead to a brief period of low-end moderate PM2.5 during the early morning hours of Tuesday and Wednesday. Good air quality should return each afternoon. There is a small (30%) chance of showers on Wednesday as a weak disturbance approaches from the west. -Curtis

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
