Alerts in force
An Air Quality Alert is issued by the National Weather Service on behalf of a state or local agency when pollution is expected to reach a level that harms health. An Air Stagnation Advisory means the air will not move enough to clear what is already in it.
None are in force near Oklahoma right now. All Pennsylvania warnings.

The forecaster’s discussion
Written by Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection for Pittsburgh and filed with AirNow.
Current Conditions at 4 PM EDT this Thursday afternoon: Brisk southwest winds with mostly sunny skies are bringing temperatures to levels more like late August than the start of October, as the mercury is rising past the 80-degree mark. In addition, fine particle (PM2.5) concentrations are in the moderate range in parts of the area. Moderate air quality continues tonight and early Friday with a cold front approaching. Here are the forecast details: *** Friday’s forecast: Mostly cloudy Friday and not as warm with showers likely as a cold front approaches and then passes through. Highs will reach the lower 70s with winds shifting to the northwest by afternoon. PM2.5 concentrations will start the day moderate, but then improve during the afternoon to the good range. *** Extended forecast: Saturday turns out mostly sunny with a northeasterly breeze with a seasonably cool afternoon as the mercury tops out in the upper 60s. PM2.5 levels will average in the good range. Sunday brings times of clouds and sunshine with high temperatures similar to Saturday. Lighter flow from the south and southeast may cause PM2.5 to increase to moderate levels. A secondary cold front passes through early Monday and ushers in the coolest air so far this season Monday and Tuesday. Breezy west to northwest winds will spell good air quality.---McAuliffe

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.
Smoke
NOAA’s Hazard Mapping System analysts drew light smoke over Oklahoma in satellite imagery today (Thu, 8:00 AM EDT to Thu, 11:00 AM EDT). That is smoke seen from above; it is not always smoke at ground level.
NOAA’s model forecasts near-surface smoke peaking at 1.1342699999999999e+47 µg/m³ around Fri, 1:00 AM EDT, above the 35 µg/m³ level of EPA’s 24-hour fine particle standard.
What this means
Moderate
Air quality is acceptable. There may be a risk for some people, particularly those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
- Who is affected
- People who are unusually sensitive to ozone or fine particles.
- What to do
- If you are unusually sensitive, consider making long or intense outdoor activity shorter or easier.
- Index range
- 51 to 100
Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.
What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
