The forecaster’s discussion
Written by Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection for Indiana County and filed with AirNow.
Current Conditions at 4 PM EDT this Friday afternoon: A cold front is moving through the area with a few rain showers accompanying it. Winds at the surface are shifting into the north and fine particle (PM2.5) concentrations are improving to the good range. Mainly dry weather is expected over the next several days with the coolest air of the season coming Monday night into Tuesday. Here are the forecast details: *** Saturday’s forecast: Saturday brings sun and a few clouds with a northeasterly breeze and a seasonably cool afternoon as highs peak in the upper 60s. Low humidity will prevent significant PM2.5 buildups. *** Sunday’s forecast: A lighter wind flow from the south Sunday will allow for PM2.5 to build some, but still in the good range. Mostly cloudy skies prevail through the day. Highs in the lower 60s. *** Monday’s forecast: A secondary cold front will sweep through overnight Sunday, turning wind flow back into the west and northwest Monday morning. PM2.5 will start the day moderate but improve to the good range during the afternoon. Highs will struggle to get past the upper 50s. *** Extended forecast: A large high pressure system will control the weather picture through the middle of the week with a good deal of sunshine Tuesday and Wednesday. Still on the cool side Tuesday, with temperatures rising some Wednesday. PM2.5 will remain in the good range Tuesday and Wednesday.---McAuliffe

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.
Smoke
NOAA’s analysts have not drawn smoke over Johnsonburg in satellite imagery today.
NOAA’s model forecasts no measurable smoke near the ground here over the next two days.

- Index range
- 0 to 50
Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.
What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
