The forecaster’s discussion

Written by New Jersey Dept. of Environmental Protection for Central and filed with AirNow.

9/25 - A Nor'easter will begin to impact the region today and throughout the weekend, bringing with it the chance for heavy rain in the afternoon/evening and gusty northeast winds. As a result, air quality will remain in the Good category statewide. 9/26 - The Nor'easter will continue to impact the region on Saturday, allowing for periods of heavy rain and strong gusty winds out of the north/northeast as the storm stalls off the New Jersey coast. Good air quality is expected statewide. 9/27 - Good air quality will persist into the remainder of the weekend as the Nor'easter remains just off of the New Jersey coast, allowing for breezy northerly winds, consistent cool temperatures, and the chance for heavy rain. 9/28 - The chance for rain will begin to taper off on Monday as the Nor'easter weakens and begins to depart the region, accompanied by breezy winds shifting out of the northwest. Air quality will remain in the Good category across New Jersey as a result.

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
