The forecaster’s discussion

Written by Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management 2 for South Bend and filed with AirNow.

Ozone has been good over the past couple of days. PM2.5 was a mix of good and moderate on Wednesday and then mostly moderate on Thursday. Today will bring temperatures reaching the mid 60's at most. Dewpoints will decrease throughout the day and fall below 50 degrees, skies will be overcast, and winds will be primarily from the north, reaching speeds over 10 mph with gusts over 20 mph. We saw some rain move through the region this morning, but dry conditions are expected for the remainder of the day. Mixing heights will reach over 3000 ft. Tomorrow will bring mostly clear skies and temperatures reaching the mid 60's once again. Dewpoints will stay around 50 degrees. Winds will be primarily from the east, falling to around 5 mph, and mixing heights will rise above 3000 ft. Sunday will bring warmer temperatures, reaching near 70 degrees, as skies stay mostly sunny and dewpoints stay around 50 degrees. Winds will be primarily from the northwest at this point, with wind speeds picking up to around 10 mph, and mixing heights will once again reach over 3000 ft. Highs on Monday will be in the low 60's at most while dewpoints stay around 50 degrees. Skies will still be mostly sunny. Winds will be primarily from the north, wind speeds will stay below 10 mph, and mixing heights will increase to over 4000 ft. The Canadian model shows good PM2.5 over the next few days, while the NOAA 6Z BC model shows good today and tomorrow then a mix of good and moderate by Sunday. In other words, both models show a decrease today compared to recent values, a result that is consistent with the rain that moved through the area this morning. As things clear out today, good PM2.5 will be likely. Moderate PM2.5 buildup will be possible again later in the period, however, after a couple of days of consistent conditions and decreasing wind speeds. Both models also show good ozone throughout the period, consistent with recent values. Given recent conditions and the autumn temperatures, moderate ozone will continue to be unlikely.

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
