Alerts in force
An Air Quality Alert is issued by the National Weather Service on behalf of a state or local agency when pollution is expected to reach a level that harms health. An Air Stagnation Advisory means the air will not move enough to clear what is already in it.

The forecaster’s discussion
Written by Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management 2 for South Bend and filed with AirNow.
Northern Regions: Ozone levels were good Monday and Tuesday. PM2.5 levels were good Monday with a mix of good and moderate Tuesday. Rain showers are currently moving east through NW and N. Central Indiana due to warm air advection and isentropic lift. The ridging present in the upper levels will keep the showers closer to the northern half of the Northern region closer to the Great Lakes. Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning the rain chances spread south as the ridge moves south. Thursday night into early Friday the cold front will bring additional rain chances into early Friday morning. We are forecast to dry out and get cooler behind the front Friday into the weekend. Temperatures are forecast to be upper 60's close to the Lake and low 70's elsewhere for Wednesday, mid to upper 70's Thursday, and low to mid 60's Friday. Dewpoints will be lower Friday back into the 50's. Winds are forecast to be from the S 0-10 MPH, SW 0-10 MPH Thursday, and N 0-10 MPH Friday. The NOAA 06Z BC model for PM2.5 forecasts moderate levels for Wednesday and Thursday with good levels Friday. The Canadian model shows good to moderate levels for Wednesday and Thursday with good Friday. I think a mix of good and moderate is likely for Wednesday and Thursday because of the low mixing heights and southerly flow pulling in light levels of wildfire smoke; the rain will keep us relatively cleaned out though with good likely Friday as the flow switches to northerly with a fresh air mass in place. The NOAA 06Z BC model for ozone predicts good levels Wednesday through Friday. The Canadian model forecasts good levels Wednesday through Friday. Good seems likely for the entire forecast period due to heavy rainfall, fresh airmasses, and cloud cover; on Friday once rain moves out it will be significantly cooler with a northerly flow further inhibiting ozone formation. Mixing heights are forecast to be around 1,500 ft. Wednesday, 2,600 ft. Thursday, and 3,800 ft. Friday .

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.
Smoke
NOAA’s analysts have not drawn smoke over Gulivoire Park in satellite imagery today.
NOAA’s model forecasts near-surface smoke peaking at 0.1 µg/m³ around Fri, 9:00 AM EDT.

Air quality is satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk.
- Who is affected
- Nobody is expected to be affected.
- What to do
- It is a good day to be outside.
- Index range
- 0 to 50
Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.
What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
