Unusual tidal phenomena (of meteorological origin ?) in Mazara del Vallo started with flooding of the beach at 09h55m; the sea receded at 10h05m. Intrusion of the sea was observed again at lOh40m which was followed by numerous oscillations the sea level with intervals of about 30 min which were observed till 14h. The highest rise of the water relative to the average sea level amounted to 1.3 m, the
lowest abatement was 2 m. The sea advanced deep onto dry land 5 m from the water line and then receded leaving the water line 7 m behind it. The amplitude of oscillations reached 3.0 - 3.3 m. A similar phenomenon was observed along
the whole south - western shore of Sicily up to Marsala. (reference #2130)
