September 13, 1928 Tsunami: Carupano, Venezuela

Singer et al. (Reference #410) reported a wave at Carupano, Venezuela, but with an absence of any link to an earthquake. Centeno-Grau (Reference #492) reported waves at Carupano and along the coast of Venezuela, and attributed them to a "cyclone" (Spanish: ciclon) that also affected Puerto Rico, Guadalupe, and Haiti. The IUGG (Reference #1738) mentions the extraordinary waves in Guadeloupe relating to "un cyclone d'une violence." IUGG also mentions seven ships destroyed at Martinique, and three deaths.The hurricane is known in the United States as the Lake Okeechobee (Florida) Hurricane, which is listed in the top ten of U.S. deadliest natural disasters, causing 2500+ deaths in Florida. Along its course, this storm, called the San Felipe Hurricane, killed more than 4000 people, and caused more than $100 million in damage. On September 13, the day of the Carupano observation, the hurricane crossed over Puerto Rico as a Category 5, with winds of 160 mph.
