Geographical origin of tsunami is unclear. Mallet (Reference #497) reported several shocks at Guadeloupe and a hurricane on the night between September 7 and 8, and more shocks at 10 pm on September 9 at Basse Terre. On September 13 there was an unusual rise and fall of the tide at Montserrat. O'Loughlin and Lander (Reference #1492) speculates that this event may have been a storm surge from a hurricane, a tsunami, or unusual tidal wave.
