EF0 tornado, Piedmont to Harriston, Virginia, August 6, 2020

From Piedmont to Harriston, this EF0 tornado ran 2.6 miles across Augusta County on August 6, 2020, touching down at 4:02 PM EDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $150,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mphthis tornado

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

9 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS LWX, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF0. The highest wind the damage implies is 87 mph.

What the Weather Service recorded

A slow-moving warm front sparked multiple rounds of isolated severe thunderstorms across the Middle Atlantic on Thursday, August 6th, 2020. The first moved through the greater DC metro area during the early morning hours. The second was a supercell that moved across the southern Shenandoah River Valley and central Virginia Piedmont, causing significant damage and unusually large hail for so late in the season. A final (third) round of thunderstorms affected northern Virginia with isolated wind damage during the mid to late evening hours.

A supercell thunderstorm spawned two tornadoes during the|afternoon of Thursday, August 6th. The first tornado touched down|along Hatchery Road, near Harriston in Augusta County Virginia.|Numerous trees were uprooted and large branches snapped along the|tornado`s path as it moved to the east-southeast. Trees fell in|multiple directions in a generally convergent nature over a path|about two and a half miles long. Notably, many trees fell towards|the south while the parent storm`s motion was toward the east,|indicating a rotating vortex in contact with the ground. NWS 88D|Doppler Radar showed rotation directly over this area.||There was tree damage noted along Rockfish Road and crop damage|along Patterson Mill Road. The tornado then moved across US-340|East Side Highway where at least one tree fell on a vehicle, but|no injuries were reported as a result. It then moved into the|Jollett Springs Mobile Home Park, where several trees were|uprooted, and one snapped. At least one mobile home had damage to|its facade when an awning blew off, as shown by a picture taken by|local broadcast media.||Sporadic straight-line tree damage was noted north and east of this|point, and although KLWX WSR-88D continued to show rotation several|thousand feet above ground level, no discernible tornadic damage was|noted east of the mobile home park from this tornado.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
