EF1 tornado, Clairette to Johnsville, Texas, April 19, 2025

From Clairette to Johnsville, this EF1 tornado ran 6.8 miles across Erath County on April 19, 2025, touching down at 8:20 PM CDT and reaching 50 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $1.0 million of property damage.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mph

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mphthis tornado

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

31 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS FWD, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF2. The highest wind the damage implies is 115 mph.

  • large tree branches snapped off of CR 238
  • From a public phone call - Large tree branches snapped, chicken coop flipped, trash cans damaged the fence.
  • Several trees snapped that blocked Loftin Road. Crews still clearing the road two days later on April 21.
  • several large pieces of sheet metal thrown into a field near an almost completely destroyed mobile home

What the Weather Service recorded

Multiple upper level shortwaves moved overtop the Plains contributing to the development of severe storms near and along a cold front and dryline on and off between the 18th and 20th. Large hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, and tornadoes were all observed, particularly on the 19th. A total of 12 tornadoes occurred along and east of Highway 281 causing considerable damage: 1 EF-2, 5 EF-1s, and 6 EF-0s.

An EF-1 tornado with max winds of 110 mph touched down 5.7 miles northwest of Hico along FM 1824 and moved northeast, damaging a few trees and outbuildings. Along CR 238, several trees were snapped and uprooted and outbuildings damaged. Further to the northeast, a home on CR 229 received roof and siding damage and several trees and outbuildings were damaged. More homes and trees were damaged along CR 209, and a large dairy farm received damage to buildings. The worst damage occurred along CR 211 where one home lost much of its roof and siding, and a mobile home was completely destroyed with debris blown up to 700 yards away across fields. The tornado curved more eastward and weakened, with the last damage noted along FM 2481 to trees in the Johnsville community.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
