EF1 tornado, Diamond, Pennsylvania, June 14, 2026

This EF1 tornado ran 4.3 miles across Venango County on June 14, 2026, touching down at 5:08 PM EDT and reaching 200 yards wide. It killed nobody.

Preliminary. This is NWS PBZ's damage survey, filed in the Damage Assessment Toolkit. The rating, the path and the casualties are the survey's and can change while it is revised. The Storm Prediction Center compiles the official record of 2026 from these surveys and publishes it in the spring of 2027; this page moves to that tornado's permanent address when it does.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mph

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mphthis tornado

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the survey found

UPDATE: tornado track has been extended, and peak speed has been raised to 95 mph based on several damage points noted in high-resolution satellite imagery.

Updated Narrative:

Damage began just west of Stone Spring House Road in a wooded area, where large tree branches were broken. It crossed to an area south of Breedtown Road, with a continuing swath of fallen trees.

A delayed report of a home with roof damage south of the Titusville Airport runway was conveyed to NWS Pittsburgh by local Fire Department personnel. This location is coincident with radar indication of very strong, compact rotation off of the Pleasantville radar, suggesting the tornadic circulation was ongoing.

Additional damage near Dempseytown Greshem Rd, Fairview Rd and Barker Rd also was brought to the attention of NWS Pittsburgh, also near the continuing radar-indicated compact vortex. A notable swath of tree damage has since was noted in high-resolution satellite data in the wooded area north of Fairview Road, continuing across Myers Ln and almost to Cherrytree Rd, suggesting the tornado was ongoing here with vigorous intensity.

One last pocket of damage was noted near Fairview Road/Route 8, coincident with the weakening tornado. Based on the high-resolution satellite data and radar data from the nearby Climavision radar, the tornado has been upgraded to EF1 intensity, and the track has been extended beyond its original endpoint.

The tornado appears to have weakened rapidly thereafter as the vortex became disorganized amid a surge in outflow.

A broad (almost 3.0 miles in width) swath of damage to trees from Wilson Mills to Bradleytown/Plum Corner to Sunville to Wallaceville appears to be caused by a strong surge of wind on the southern flank of a mesovortex that crossed this region at the same time that the tornado to the north was beginning to form. High-resolution satellite data has a stronger signal of more intense damage near Rice Road/Wallaceville Road.

NWS Pittsburgh appreciates the large number of photos and reports provided by residents in the affected areas that have enabled us to identify damage swaths in northern Venango County more completely.

Written by NWS PBZ in the NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit. A survey is revised as better evidence arrives.

The damage survey

17 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS CLE and NWS CTP and NWS LIX and NWS PBZ, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF1. The highest wind the damage implies is 100 mph.

  • Pine tree uprooted, facing WNW opposite of the storm motion.
  • Uprooted hardwood facing ENE.
  • Area of concentrated damage with numerous uprooted and snapped trees. Trees fell with slight convergent pattern toward clearing in canopy.
  • Cluster of trees uprooted to the ESE, nearly parallel with the road.

Survey points are preliminary and are the raw material the published rating was built from. Source: NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit.

What the Weather Service recorded

Aided by a cold front and a shortwave, a strong line of thunderstorms developed in central Ohio and quickly progressed east across western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. A moisture rich environment with mid to upper 60s dew points and mid 70s temperatures supported a favorable setup with MLCAPE values around 1000 J/kg and strong effective shear of 40-50 knots. Widespread swaths of wind damage were noted with 60-80 mph wind, and plenty of low level shear also supported embedded mesovortices and transient tornadoes within the line of thunderstorms.

NWS Storm Survey confirms an EF-0 tornado with maximum wind of 80 mph.

The warnings

No tornado warning for this county appears in the archive as in force at the moment the tornado touched down.

The county was under a severe thunderstorm watch, issued at 17:25 UTC and running to 22:20 UTC.

Lead time is measured from the issue of the warning in force to the touchdown time in the database, both of which were recorded to the minute by different people.

The forecast that day

The Storm Prediction Center had this point in a Slight Risk, with a 0.02 chance of a tornado within 25 miles. The outlook in force was issued at 19:48 UTC.

SPC's Day 1 convective outlook as it stood when the tornado began, read at the touchdown point. The same archive is on the radar archive.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. A survey can be revised, so the rating, the path and the casualties can all still change.
