EF1 tornado, Portage Lakes, Ohio, April 15, 2018

This EF1 tornado ran 0.1 miles across Summit County on April 15, 2018, touching down at 6:16 PM EDT and reaching 25 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $25,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

An area of low pressure moved across the Tennessee Valley on April 15th. A front or trough stretching north from this low crossed northern Ohio causing a large area of showers to develop. Some embedded thunderstorms were also reported. One of the thunderstorms produced a brief tornado in Coventry in Summit County. Some straight line downburst wind damage was also reported in nearby Twinsburg.

An EF1 tornado briefly touched down along Manchester Road in Coventry Township. The initial touchdown occurred in a restaurant parking lot. Two signs and a light pole at the restaurant were damaged. The tornado then crossed Manchester Road and flipped a parked car at a second restaurant. Another car nearby was spun around several times. Several tree limbs were also snapped. No injuries were reported. This tornado was captured on a security camera video. The tornado appeared to be on the ground for just over a tenth of a mile.
