   Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

   Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

   Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

   Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

   Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

6. EF5over 200 mph

   Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

   The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

August 19-20���a rapidly deepening low pressure system tracked from south central Kansas to southwest Iowa. Unseasonably strong wind shear led to the development of severe storms with heavy rainfall across southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri during the late afternoon and evening hours of the 19th . Several EF-0 and two EF-1 tornadoes developed with these storms over Barton, Vernon, Barry and Webster Counties. Rainfall accumulations averaged between one half inch and one inch, with isolated amounts up to three inches over Wright and Barton Counties.

A National Weather Service survey determined that EF-1 tornado starting 1.5 SE of Sheldon, Mo. Damage occurred to a few farm outbuildings. The tornado continued on the ground for two minutes to the northeast uprooting trees along the tornado path before lifting one mile east of Sheldon, Mo. Maximum winds were estimated at 95 mph.
