EF0 tornado, Verdella to Milford, Missouri, August 19, 2018

From Verdella to Milford, this EF0 tornado ran 0.3 miles across Barton County on August 19, 2018, touching down at 5:59 PM CDT and reaching 25 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mphthis tornado

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

7 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS SGF, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF1. The highest wind the damage implies is 95 mph.

  • irrigation system blown over. Estimated 40 yd path width and 0.1 mile path length.
  • Tree damage at intersection of NE 90th Rd and NE 20th Ln.

Survey points are preliminary and are the raw material the published rating was built from. Source: NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit.

What the Weather Service recorded

August 19-20a rapidly deepening low pressure system tracked from south central Kansas to southwest Iowa. Unseasonably strong wind shear led to the development of severe storms with heavy rainfall across southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri during the late afternoon and evening hours of the 19th . Several EF-0 and two EF-1 tornadoes developed with these storms over Barton, Vernon, Barry and Webster Counties. Rainfall accumulations averaged between one half inch and one inch, with isolated amounts up to three inches over Wright and Barton Counties.

A National Weather Service survey determined that a brief EF-0 tornado touchdown that blew over a center-pivot irrigation system in a field off of West highway V in Verdella.

A brief EF-0 tornado touched down near the intersection of NE 90th Road and NE 20th Lane. Maximum winds were estimated at 61mph. The tornado width was 25 yards with a path length of 0.10 miles. There were large branches broken.

A National Weather Service storm survey determined that a brief EF-0 tornado touched down near North MO Highway A. The tornado was short-lived lasting nearly 2 minutes before ending near the intersection of North MO Highway A and NE 90th Road. Max winds estimated at 74 mph, width of 25 yards, and a path length of 0.25 miles.

From NOAA NCEI's Storm Events Database, the narrative the local forecast office wrote for Storm Data.

The warnings

24 minutes of warning. NWS SGF issued a tornado warning for this county at 22:35 UTC, 24 minutes before the tornado touched down, in force until 23:00 UTC.

The forecast that day

The Storm Prediction Center had this point in a Marginal Risk, with a 0.02 chance of a tornado within 25 miles. The outlook in force was issued at 19:53 UTC.

SPC's Day 1 convective outlook as it stood when the tornado began, read at the touchdown point. The same archive is on the radar archive.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
