EF0 tornado, Reading, Minnesota, August 17, 2019

This EF0 tornado ran 4.0 miles across Nobles County on August 17, 2019, touching down at 10:59 PM CDT and reaching 40 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $10,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

What the Weather Service recorded

As a strong upper level wave pushed into the western Dakotas during the evening hours, isolated supercellular storms developed across central South Dakota and moved through areas west of the James River. With 2000-2500 J/kg of MLCAPE and deep layer shear of 35 to 45 knots, the isolated storms produced hail up to golf ball size. Soon, an increasing amount of DCAPE of 1000-1250 J/kg and increase in 0-3 km shear with development of a strong low-level jet aided in the transition to enhanced linear structures, which then developed a series of mesovortices as the line moved into far eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa. Several brief tornadoes developed with mesovortices in southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa, along with areas of enhanced wind damage.

A brief tornado spun up a mile and a half northwest of Reading, uprooting a tree and taking down several other branches. While most of the damage along the path toward the east-northeast was to trees and crops, one house had some minor damage with removal of a section of roofing material. The average path width was 40 yards.
