EF1 tornado, Bison to Pfeifer, Kansas, May 25, 2012

From Bison to Pfeifer, this EF1 tornado ran 2.8 miles across Rush and Ellis counties on May 25, 2012, touching down at 10:35 PM CDT and reaching 200 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

A warm front lifting north under very cold temperatures aloft was the focus of severe thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening. Tornadoes produced scattered damage.

This tornado starting moving north then turned back to the northwest and finally west before dissipating. It did damage mainly to trees and power lines. During the damage survey there was evidence of significant ground and vegetation scouring.

Damage was done to trees from this tornado.

This tornado moved into Ellis county at 10:40 CDT.

This tornado moved out of Rush county at 10:40 PM CDT and did damage to trees and power poles.
