EF1 tornado, Burlington, Illinois, August 9, 2021

This EF1 tornado ran 3.8 miles across Kane County on August 9, 2021, touching down at 5:24 PM CDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

Scattered thunderstorms produced heavy rain and flooding across portions of northern Illinois during the morning and afternoon of August 9th. Additional thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening produced several tornadoes.

A tornado with peak winds of 95 mph touched down just east of the DeKalb Kane County line, northwest of Plank Road. A garage door was blown in and several trees were uprooted at a residence just west of Engel Road. The tornado moved east along the south side of Plank Road, producing tree damage. A large farm outbuilding was damaged west of Lawrence Road. The tornado then moved southeast where it produced sporadic tree and crop damage along Waughon and Peplow Roads. The tornado continued southeast and lifted near the intersection of Burlington and Romke Roads.
