EF1 tornado, Alda to Wamac, Illinois, November 17, 2013

From Alda to Wamac, this EF1 tornado ran 4.8 miles across Washington and Clinton counties on November 17, 2013, touching down at 12:13 PM CST and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mph

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mphthis tornado

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

31 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS LSX, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF4. The highest wind the damage implies is 180 mph.

  • shingles blown off. windows brooken. sun room destroyed, garage destroyed. Man suffered minor cuts on his legs.
  • vehicle overturned and rolled
  • garage roof lifted off. partial roof of house removed
  • barn destroyed. old Winnebage RV destroyed.

What the Weather Service recorded

Strong cold front moved through the region with plenty of lift, moisture and instability. Numerous severe storms developed and raced east across forecast area. There were numerous reports of large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes. Also, because of a tight gradient with this system non-thunderstorm winds gusted in excess of 40 mph in a number of locations.

As the EF4 tornado dissipated, another tornado formed one mile to the east on Sycamore Road just west of intersection with Peach Tree Road. At this location, a barn had several of its walls collapsed on the south side of Sycamore Road. The tornado then travelled to the northeast. It crossed Peach Tree Road and destroyed a barn about four tenths of a mile north of Sycamore Road. It continued to the northeast causing sporadic tree damage. The most widespread damage occurred near the Flying M Ranch Golf Course, about 3 miles southwest of the city limits of Centralia, Illinois. In this area the tornado lifted some panels off of a barn roof on Kuhn Road and caused significant roof damage to a house on County Highway 18 just south of Klub House Lane. The damage to the house was rated EF1. Just northeast of the house, the golf course club house sustained considerable roof damage and several windows were blown out. The tornado continued to the northeast crossing from Washington County into far southeastern Clinton County, about a third of a mile west of Wilkin Road. The path length of the tornado in Washington County was 3.58 miles with a max path width of 100 yards. The damage for this segment was estimated to be EF1 with max wind speeds of 95 to 100 MPH. Overall, the entire tornado path length was 4.76 miles with a max path width of 100 yards and a maximum damage rating of EF1.

The tornado continued to the northeast crossing from Washington County into far southeastern Clinton County, about a third of a mile west of Wilkin Road. It travelled to the northeast causing only tree damage before lifting and dissipating only three quarters of a mile west of a large mobile home park in Wamac. The path length of the tornado in Clinton County was 1.18 miles with a max path width of 20 yards. The damage for this segment was estimated to be EF0. Overall, the entire tornado path length was 4.76 miles with a max path width of 100 yards and a maximum damage rating of EF1.

The forecast that day

The Storm Prediction Center had this point in a Moderate Risk, with a 0.15 chance of a tornado within 25 miles, in the hatched area where significant tornadoes were expected. The outlook in force was issued at 16:30 UTC.

SPC's Day 1 convective outlook as it stood when the tornado began, read at the touchdown point. The same archive is on the radar archive.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
