From Elkville to Dowell, this EF0 tornado ran 3.9 miles across Jackson County on April 19, 2011, touching down at 8:35 PM CDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $70,000 of property damage.

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  • In this location, a carport was destroyed, a small camper damaged and a garage and small barn had roof damage.
  • In this location, the tornado caused roof damage to a home and a barn.
  • Missiles witnessed in the damage. Large branches were driven into the side of a house. Eyewitnesses reported seeing "twisting" motion.
  • In Dowell, an amateur radio tower was bent over. A carport also recevied some damage. Peak winds 75 mph. Avg path width 50 yds. Path length 3.94 miles.

What the Weather Service recorded

Thunderstorms organized into a bow echo that produced widespread very damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. A shortwave trough over the central and southern high Plains moved northeast through the Mid-Mississippi Valley into the upper Great Lakes. A surface low attendant to this system moved from west central Missouri northeast to north of St. Louis. The trailing cold front advanced southeast across the Lower Ohio Valley and served as the primary focus for thunderstorms.

The weak tornado destroyed several carports, a small camper, and a small garage in Dowell. Numerous trees were uprooted. Numerous homes and barns received some roof damage. An amateur radio tower was bent over. Peak winds were estimated near 75 mph. The average path width was 50 yards.
