F1 tornado, Manito, Illinois, May 10, 2003

This F1 tornado ran 2.0 miles across Mason County on May 10, 2003, touching down at 9:38 PM CDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. F5261 to 318 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

A tornado touched down just southwest of Manito. As it traveled to the northeast it destroyed 4 homes, as well as power lines and trees. Twenty-four homes sustained minor to major damage. One elderly woman sustained minor injuries, a cut on her arm and bruises, while taking shelter in her walk-in pantry. No other injuries were reported.

A tornado touched down east of Manito. It destroyed several barns, sheds and a garage. A couple of homes had minor damage. Also, numerous trees, power lines and power poles were blown down. No injuries were reported.
