Dense Fog in Maryland
Every dense fog event the National Weather Service has filed in Maryland, year by year, with the most significant episodes. Fog reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less, filed where it caused accidents or disruption.

Ranked by deaths, injuries, damage and size together.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, October 31, 1997A tractor trailer collided with a crowded school bus in patchy dense fog and killed the bus' 61-year-old male driver and injured 30 students. The bus was crossing U.S. Route 50 in Easton at 730 a.m. EST when it was hit on the driver's side, nearly severing it in half.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, November 29, 2006Dense fog occurred on the morning of the 29th across much of the Mid Atlantic.
- Tornadoes and Damaging Wind in Maryland, November 5, 2003A tornadic thunderstorm produced a pair of weak tornadoes across Northern Virginia before crossing into Maryland on the 5th. Once in Maryland, the first tornado produced scattered damage in rural areas between the Potomac River and Poolesville.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, June 25, 1998Some patchy dense fog caused several chain reaction accidents around the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Maryland State Route 404. Six accidents that involved eighteen vehicles occurred within a 200 yard area and caused eight injuries and five hospitalizations.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, February 23 to 24, 2018An unusually moist air mass and light winds led to areas of dense fog.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, January 3 to 4, 2020Light winds beneath a subsidence inversion atop saturated ground led to the formation of fog across central MD. Visibilities were around a quarter of a mile.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, February 23, 2006Areas of dense fog occurred during the early morning.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, December 9 to 10, 2012High pressure across most of the Northeast and Mid Atlantic led to the development of dense fog across the region. Light winds and saturated low levels aided in fog development.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, January 12 to 14, 2013High pressure was centered off the Atlantic coast. Southerly flow has transported mild temperatures and moisture northward into the Mid Atlantic Region. Calm winds and low level moisture led to dense fog overnight. This was the second consecutive day of dense fog in the region.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, December 23 to 24, 2014High pressure over the region resulted in light and variable winds. Moisture advection from a coastal low pressure combining with the light winds resulted in an extended period of dense fog.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, October 22, 2020Areas of dense fog developed across the region after midnight on the 22nd, with widespread visibility below 1/4 mile. The fog dissipated by 11 AM.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, October 21, 2020Light winds and plentiful low level moisture led to widespread dense fog. The fog dissipated towards late morning.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, March 24 to 25, 2021Light winds and plentiful low level moisture allowed areas of dense fog to form late on the 24th. The fog dissipated just after dawn on the 25th.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, March 24 to 25, 2007Saturated ground and light winds allowed dense fog to develop. Automated surface observations reported visibilities of a quarter mile or less during the late evening hours of March 24th through mid morning on March 25th.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, February 25 to 26, 2018An unusually moist air mass and light winds led to areas of dense fog.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, December 28 to 29, 2018Clearing skies, falling temperatures, and abundant low level moisture led to the formation of dense fog.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, May 2, 2019Warm, moist air aloft overrunning cooler surface air combined with lingering low level moisture to produce low clouds and widespread dense fog across portions of the region.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, October 23, 2020Areas of dense fog developed across the region after midnight on the 23rd, with widespread visibility below 1/4 mile. The fog dissipated by 10 AM.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, March 29 to 30, 2020Dense fog developed across much of the state of Maryland within a marine layer situated to the north of an area of low pressure.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, January 13, 2006Areas of dense fog occurred early in the morning of January 13 across the region.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, December 14, 2006Dense fog formed on the morning of the 14th across the Mid Atlantic.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, December 1 to 2, 2012High pressure was moving off the Mid Atlantic coast overnight. Abundant low level moisture and light winds contributed to fog development across the region.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, October 8, 2018High levels of moisture combined with clear skies to create areas of fog, some of which became locally dense.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, December 17, 2019Moisture underneath a subsidence inversion resulted in areas of dense fog. Visibility was around one-quarter mile.
- Dense Fog in Maryland, January 14 to 15, 2020Moist air at low levels was trapped beneath a subsidence inversion and winds went calm as high pressure moved overhead, leading to the formation of fog across much of central and western Maryland. Visibilities were around a quarter of a mile.
