Thunderstorms developed off the higher terrain of eastern New Mexico on the afternoon of the sixth. Strong northwest flow behind a departing upper level low and a favorable moisture environment across West Texas allowed storms to persist into the South Plains on the evening of the sixth. These storms formed a small bow echo like feature with the apex of the bow impinging into western Lubbock County. A Texas Tech University West Texas mesonet site near Reese measured a severe wind gust to 71 mph. Additionally, an NWS storm survey revealed outbuildings that had been destroyed as well as roofs that had been blown off homes in western Lubbock County.

In any case, severe weather remains unlikely. The trough will become more shallow is it tracks over the Great Plains and flow over our area will become very zonal through Friday. A few embedded shortwaves may lead to additional thunderstorm development during the afternoon/evening, however chances remain quite low overall.
