What happened

The episode as NWS FFC wrote it up.

Drought conditions intensified across north and central Georgia through February as the region's traditional recharge window began to close with significant deficits in place. While January saw a semi-active weather pattern, February was largely characterized by a more stagnant, dry pattern. Occasional cold frontal passages brought cooler air but failed to provide widespread, drought-improving rains across most of the area. This lack of meaningful precipitation caused the drought to not only persist but to expand further statewide.

Precipitation for February was markedly below normal for nearly the entire state. Widespread totals across north and central Georgia were limited to 1.5 to 4.5 inches (50 to 90 percent of normal), except in two swaths of higher totals. A stretch from Columbus to Macon to Swainsboro observed 4 to 7 inches of rain (110 to 200 percent of normal), as well as the Marietta to Snellville area in the Atlanta Metro which saw 5 to 7 (125 to 200 percent of normal). Despite the higher totals in some areas, streamflow and soil moistures struggled to revive following the waves of rainfall, and reports from agriculture partners maintained the dire grazing and pasture conditions.

The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) reflected a month of aggressive expansion of the D2 Severe Drought and D3 Extreme Drought areas. At the start of the month, 50.96 percent of north and central Georgia was D2 Severe Drought. By the end of the month, D2 or worse conditions covered 78.0 percent of the area. Most concerning was the rapid expansion of D3, which grew from roughly 2.9 percent to nearly 18.3 percent of the region.

The drought persisted and intensified through March as dry conditions and lack of rainfall continued through what should be one of the wettest months.

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Sunday)
Issued at 229 PM EST Sat Jan 31 2026

Snow is ongoing across portions of north and central Georgia, with
heaviest snowfall occurring across the eastern half of the forecast
area -- roughly aligned with our local maxima in 850mb
frontogenesis/a zone of convergence in surface winds. A series of
stronger, heavier snow bands pushing southwestward out of upstate
South Carolina may produce an additional few inches of snowfall
along our far eastern tier (generally within a county or two of
Athens).

Areas along and southwest of the Metro have seen very small scale
(exceeding the purview of HiRes model guidance), convectively-
enhanced snow bands set up, supporting bursts of heavier snow
showers over a period of several hours. Owing to strong winds and
slightly warmer-than-anticipated ground temperatures, accumulations
have struggled to surpass much more than a dusting in these areas.
Evidence of this banding extends as far north as Bartow and Gordon
counties, so portions of the Metro are likely to continue to see
light snow showers (if minimal accumulations) over the next few
hours.

Hardest hit areas appear to generally fall along I-985 as it extends
into northeast Georgia, where totals of 4 to 6 inches have been
observed through the time of writing of this AFD. Travel remains
treacherous in these locations, especially so for any locations that
see any final bursts of heavier snowfall that will further decrease
visibility on roadways.

Lingering moisture wrapping around the backside of a rapidly
intensifying surface low pressure system off the GA/SC coast will
dissipate through the evening, causing any remaining snow to taper
off from west to east through 8 to 10PM tonight.

Unseasonably cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills have
settled in for the weekend, supported by a secondary push of
extremely cold air associated with an advancing Arctic surface high.
Highs today occurred very close to midnight last night (in the
mid- 20s to lower 40s), and have gradually dropped into the teens
to lower 30s areawide. An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for
all of north and central Georgia beginning 7PM tonight, carrying
through 1PM Sunday: lows will drop further into the teens (and
single digits across far northeast Georgia) overnight, with wind
chills dipping below zero for most areas along and north of a line
extending from I-85 to Athens.

Sunday will be dry, clear, and cold, with highs in the 30s to
lower 40s -- some 15 to 20 degrees below average. Areas that
received significant snowfall accumulations today may trend a few
degrees colder due to the influence of the snowpack, which could
hinder meaningful melting from occurring, especially in shaded
areas.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday morning through next Friday)
Issued at 229 PM EST Sat Jan 31 2026

Previous long term discussion included below:

Travel impacts are likely to linger Sunday Night/Monday morning
given limited warming and temperatures falling back into the teens
to low 20s during this time period. This will be especially true
for areas that received higher snowfall accumulation on Saturday.
Winds will largely have diminished by this time so wind chills
will be in the teens areawide. So not quite as extreme as Sunday
morning but frigid nonetheless.

Temperatures begin to rebound on Monday under mostly sunny skies
which will lead to some melting of snowfall. Forecast highs will
rise into the 40s, though temperatures could be a tad cooler in
areas where snowfall sticks around. Temperatures will once again
fall below freezing Monday Night/Tuesday morning with values in the
20s areawide. More notable warming occurs during the day Tuesday
with forecast highs in the 50s across North GA and lower 60s in
parts of Central Georgia.

While global ensembles still present some uncertainties, there is
general agreement that another low pressure system and associated
cold front will push through North and Central Georgia between
Tuesday Night and Wednesday. Rain is expected to be the primary
precipitation type at this time given temperatures above freezing at
onset and through the duration of any precip. However, there remains
a potential for a brief mix or period of snow showers in the far
northeast GA mountains early Thursday morning before the cold front
brings precipitation to an end. Details including timing and amounts
will be discussed in future forecasts.
