What happened

The episode as NWS CRP wrote it up.

A cluster of storms in La Salle County progressed southeastward through the evening hours. These storms intensified and developed into a well-organized MCS with a maturing bow echo feature as it extended into northeastern Duval and Jim Wells counties. An uptick in radar velocity was noted beginning north of San Diego, TX around 8:45pm CDT, with large wet melting hail enforcing a notable stronger surge of northwesterly winds on the southern edge of the storm over west Alice shortly after 9:00pm CDT.

This southern edge of the MCS became the most destructive bowing segment through the rest of the storm's lifespan, resulting in numerous power and transmission poles snapped, metal building structure collapses, and large trees snapped and uprooted. Widespread wind speeds of 70-90 mph were noted, particularly from Alice to Petronila with a few locations seeing wind gusts as high as 115 mph. While we were unable to access the Petronila area to assess the damage further due to numerous downed power and transmission line, photos and videos shared with us suggest that winds in excess of 100 mph continued through this area as well.

Hundreds of power and transmission poles were snapped between Alice and Petronila. Most were snapped near the base, however a few were found to be snapped 10-15 feet above ground, indicating peak winds of 115 mph. In addition, roof damage was observed, along with several rolled over semi-trucks and campers. Overall, the preliminary path length is 54 miles with a max width of 16 miles.

- A Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) of severe thunderstorms much of
South Texas this afternoon through tonight, a Marginal Risk (level 1
out of 5) over the remainder of South Texas.

- Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 4) for excessive rainfall this
afternoon through tonight across the southern half of the area, with
a Marginal Risk over the northern half of the area.

- Coastal Flood Advisory and a High Risk of rip currents in effect
for Gulf-facing beaches of the Middle Texas coast through Friday AM.

A few storms have already fired up today across western/southern
portions of our CWA and over our southern waters. Look for more
activity throughout the evening to expand across the area,
especially overnight as things could get busy.

Values from this mornings sounding at CRP, SBCAPE: 2200+ J/kg, PW:
1.63", DCAPE: 1000+ J/kg, Eff Bulk Shear: 47 kts. Confirming an
active pattern today with a good amount of instability aloft as an
upper level jet and a mid-level shortwave combine with lower level
features including a stalled boundary and moisture convergence.
Resulting, in a moderate to high (40-70%) chance for showers and
thunderstorms across South Texas early this afternoon across the
southern Coastal Bend/Plains to the Rio Grande and again tonight
with up to 80% as an MCS looks to develop as the aforementioned
shortwave makes its way across our CWA from the Big Bend region.
Storm motion out west near the international border is expected to
be initially southeast then more easterly as storms move into our
western CWA. Current Hi-Res models have storms exiting the area
around 8-10Z Friday over the southern Coastal Bend then continuing
eastward out over the Gulf.

Large to significant hail, damaging winds (50-60 mph) and heavy
rainfall are the primary threats with any strong to severe storms. A
tornado or two also can not be ruled out. Rainfall totals today
through Friday morning generally range in the 0.50-1.50" with higher
amounts possible.

Afternoon temperatures today and tomorrow will range from the mid
80s near the coast to around 90 west. Overnight lows tonight will
generally be between the mid 60s - low 70s. For Friday night, expect
lows in the low to mid 60s inland with temperatures across the
island to bottom out generally around 70 degrees.

- After cooler temperatures this weekend, hot temperatures return by
Tuesday, with the potential for excessive heat concerns mid-week
over the western half of the area.

Although the center of a mid to upper level low will meander between
the Lower Mississippi River Basin and SE Texas through early next
week, rain chances will remain minimal inland due to below normal
moisture availability. As the aforementioned low lifts northeastward
Monday night into Tuesday, ridging will then take a hold aloft
maintaining a generally dry forecast over the region.

Below normal temperatures can be expected over the weekend with highs
in the 80s and overnight lows in the mid 50s to low 60s. A warming
trend will then follow into next week with highs forecast to reach
the triple digits out west by Tuesday. Current forecast indicates a
Minor to Moderate Heat Risk Tuesday through at least Thursday next
week, with well above normal temperatures in store.

MVFR conditions will generally prevail at area terminals through
late tonight in response to convection nearing the sites. Some of
the storms could become strong to severe at times, with large
hail, damaging winds, and visibility restrictions possible.
Conditions will improve by 06-09Z tonight from west to east as a
front brings much drier air into the area with ceilings returning
to VFR levels. Overall, winds will remain light, to the exception
of around any thunderstorm that does develop and impacts the
sites. Winds will shift to the north and northeast behind the
front Friday morning.

Moderate to Fresh (BF 4-5) northeasterly flow will continue through
Friday becoming more northerly then decreasing to Gentle to Moderate
(BF 3-4). Seas are currently around 5 feet today with 8-9 second
swells. Expect around a moderate (40-60%) chance for showers and
thunderstorms over much of the waters tonight through Friday.
There will be a low to medium (20-50%) chance of showers and
thunderstorms Saturday into Saturday night with the highest
chances over the offshore Gulf waters. Winds will shift southerly
Monday into Monday night and remain southerly through mid next
week.
