Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 138 PM PDT Sat May 3 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * A low pressure system will bring chances for showers and thunderstorms and gusty outflow winds this afternoon across the region. * Isolated showers return once more on Sunday, with gusty winds being the main concerns. * After a brief cool down this weekend, warmer temperatures, light winds, and dry conditions are in store to start next week. && .DISCUSSION... Showers and thunderstorms march north this afternoon, bringing a handful of lightning strikes, brief heavy rainfall, and gusty outflow winds. As the day progresses, showers will become more widespread in coverage, with the main concern of a few severe wind gusts, primarily from microbursts due to strong DCAPE values (500-700 J/kg), out in the Western Nevada Basin and Range. Like last night, it's likely that some persistent showers and thunderstorms will linger through the overnight hours. As the low to our south moves inland tonight and into tomorrow, upper level flow will switch to a N-NE direction. This will allow for another round of showers, with light snow showers in the Sierra of Mono county. Snow levels bottom out around 8 kft close to midnight, which coincides with the best chance for showers. Accumulations along the lower roads and passes will be little to none, but slushy conditions are still possible. Peaks in Mono county will see up to 5 inches with 1-3 inches possible below 8000' in isolated locations. Overall, the highest QPF will be found out in the Western Nevada Basin and Range and southern Mono county with up 0.5-0.75" likely. Showers will lighten up Sunday as the low moves further east, ushering in gusty afternoon winds. Additionally, Sunday will be the coolest day of the week, with highs in the 50s and 60s (mountains and valleys, respectively). A brief shortwave trough will bring increased wind gusts Monday, but we also start to warm up. Looking into next week, high pressure returns, bringing temperatures back up to the 70s and 80s (mountains and valleys, respectively). Light winds and dry conditions will also be on the docket for early next week. Another shortwave Thursday may bring light showers along the Sierra, however, stay tuned for more details as we get closer. -Giralte && .AVIATION... Widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms for all terminals this afternoon, with some lingering into the evening and overnight hours. However, the most intense showers are expected to dissipate by 04/06Z. The strongest thunderstorms today will be capable of brief downpours, potentially bringing brief MVFR conditions, gusty and erratic winds, small hail, and lightning. Otherwise, breezy W-SW winds are forecasted this afternoon before shifting N-NE tonight and through tomorrow morning. Light showers will return tonight, progressing in a north to south fashion, impacting all terminals with periods of brief MVFR conditions. -SHSN possible for KMMH after 04/06Z.
