Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
710 PM EDT Mon Jun 13 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front will continue tracking through our region,
then it should stall just to our south tonight. A mesoscale
convective system, also known as an MCS, will ride along the
cold front and move off the coast Tuesday afternoon. At the same
time, surface high pressure will build across New England and
the Mid- Atlantic on Tuesday and remain in place into Wednesday.
A warm front will then lift across the region on Thursday. Low
pressure will track to our north, across southern Canada,
dragging a cold front into the area on Friday. High pressure
will attempt to build eastward out of the Great Lakes into this
weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A weak cold front extended from New England to southern New
Jersey, Delaware and eastern Maryland early this evening. This
front will sag a bit more to the south and east tonight.
Quiet and humid conditions on tap for most of the night. All
eyes then shift on an MCS that will develop over the Great Lakes
region and take a run at the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Tuesday
morning.
The bulk of the instability will be south of that front over
Delmarva, the Delaware Valley, including Philadelphia, and
extreme southern New Jersey. With surface dew points well in the
60s to around 70, surface-based CAPE values should be upwards
of 1500+ J/kg. The concern is that there is still a good deal of
discrepancies among the models as to the timing and placement
of the MCS.
The 12Z/13 NAM brings a fairly intense squall line into
Philadelphia, northern Delmarva, and into southern New Jersey
late Tuesday morning and into midday. The 12Z/13 NAMNEST is a
bit weaker, but is a bit more to the southwest compared to the
NAM, and the brunt of the line would go through eastern Maryland
and Delaware before moving into southern New Jersey. Think the
NAMNEST would be more probable than the NAM as the instability
looks to be limited north of Delaware. The 12Z/13 HRRR seems to
follow the NAMNEST, though may be an hour or so slower. The
12Z/13 Fv3 is faster than both the NAM and the HRRR, and brings
showers and thunderstorms into Maryland and Delaware in the pre-
dawn hours just ahead of the main MCS. Should this happen, this
may stabilize the air mass just before the MCS gets there, and
the impacts may be more limited compared to the more aggressive
NAM/HRRR. 12Z/13 GFS follows suit with a weaker and faster
system. 12Z/13 WRF-ARW has the system decaying as it moves into
Delmarva late Tuesday morning. 12Z/13 RGEM keeps it together,
but is so far south and west that it only impacts the eastern
shores of Maryland. The 12Z/13 ECMWF seems to be much slower,
not really making it into the southwest portions of the forecast
area until midday or so.
Feel the best way to handle this is to have the MCS approach
Reading just after daybreak Tuesday, and tracking to the south
along the stationary front and towards the area of highest
instability, which is over Delmarva. Factoring in that these
systems also tend to take a right turn, think the strongest
portions of the MCS will stay southwest of a line from Reading
to Philadelphia to Atlantic City. Will focus an area of likely
PoPs on portions of the Delaware Valley, Delmarva, and southwest
New Jersey.
Heavy rain, strong, damaging winds, and large hail are likely.
Although this system should move quickly, there is the potential
for localized flash flooding, especially if the heaviest rain
falls over urban areas.
If this system ends up being a bit quicker than forecast, it
has the potential to hit the area during the morning commute.
There may be lingering showers and thunderstorms over southern
portions of the forecast area into the afternoon, but by then,
the MCS should have lost its intensity.
Cooler on Tuesday with highs in the low 80s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The period begins with a departing MCS. Behind the MCS, surface
high pressure will build into the region from New England. The
mid-level flow will remain NW. This will limit any
precipitation. Lows Tuesday night and Wednesday will be at or
above normal.
At this time, we'll keep the shower threat in the forecast
Wednesday night, but confidence isn't high. It will be short-
wave dependent. Lows will be above normal.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A warm front will lift across the region on Thursday. A cold
front will follow on Friday. Showers and thunderstorms appear
likely at this time. Near normal temperatures are expected
Thursday with above normal expected Thursday night into Friday.
Behind the cold front, precipitation chances come to end on
Friday night. Lows will be about normal. Saturday will be
noticeably less humid with dewpoints possibly falling into the
40s. Saturday's highs look to be at or slightly below normal.
More of the same can be expected for Sunday, Dry and less humid.
&&
.AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Tonight...VFR. West wind less than 10 knots becoming variable.
High confidence.
Tuesday...VFR conditions except in any showers and
thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to move
southeastward across our region on Tuesday morning. The
precipitation will likely remain to the south of KABE and KTTN.
However, there is the potential that it will impact KRDG, KPNE,
KPHL, KILG, KMIV and KACY. We will indicate a PROB30 for
thunderstorms at this time and refine the forecast during the
night. Any thunderstorms could be accompanied by strong wind
gusts from the west and northwest, along with heavy rain and
hail. Northeast wind 8 knots or less, becoming northwest around
5 to 10 knots on Tuesday afternoon. Medium confidence.
Outlook...
Tuesday night...VFR. Light and variable winds. Low confidence.
Wednesday...VFR. Winds from the S-SE at 5 to 10 kts. Moderate
confidence.
Thursday...Mainly VFR. MVFR/IFR possible Thursday night in
showers and thunderstorms. Winds from the S at 5 to 10 kts.
Stronger gusts possible in and near thunderstorms. Moderate
confidence.
Friday...MVFR/IFR conditions possible Friday morning in showers
and thunderstorms. Restrictions will still be possible into the
afternoon hours, but become more isolated. VFR Friday night. SW
winds shifting to the NW at 5 to 10 kts. Stronger gusts
possible in and near thunderstorms. Moderate confidence.
Saturday...VFR. NW winds 5 to 15 kts with gusts to 25 kts.
Moderate confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions overall. S winds around 10
kt, becoming NE on Tuesday with 3 to 4 ft seas. An area of
thunderstorms may impact Delaware Bay and southern ocean waters
Tuesday morning with strong winds, heavy rain, and hail.
Outlook...
Tuesday night...Sub-SCA conditions expected. Variable winds
less than 10 kts. Seas 2 to 3 ft.
Wednesday...Sub-SCA conditions expected. Winds from the S-SE at
5 to 15 kts. Seas 2 to 3 ft.
Thursday...Sub-SCA conditions expected. SE winds at 10 to 15
kts, becoming SW. Gusts could approach 25 kts late Thursday
night. Seas building to 3 to 4 ft.
Friday...Approaching SCA conditions. SW winds 10 to 15 kts,
shifting to the NW at night. Gusts could approach 25 kts. Seas 3
to 4 ft.
Saturday...Approaching SCA conditions. NW winds 10 to 15 kts.
Gusts could approach 25 kts. Seas 3 to 4 ft.
Rip currents...
Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph this evening, then northeasterly 5
to 15 mph Tuesday. There is a low risk of rip currents along
both the New Jersey and Delaware beaches for the remainder of
today. Tuesday's risk is also low at this time, but might end up
approaching moderate.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With the full moon on Tuesday, the highest of the astronomical
tides on the Atlantic Coast are within one half foot of minor
flooding thresholds through Thursday. Consequently, it will not
take much to result in minor coastal flooding.
With relatively light and mostly parallel flow to the coast
today, expect water levels on the Monday evening high tide to be
right at or just below minor flooding thresholds. Thus, only
spotty minor tidal flooding is forecast.
On Tuesday though, the winds could briefly go to northeasterly
or even easterly. This, combined with the slightly higher
astronomical tides could result in widespread minor flooding on
the Atlantic coast and even along the shores of the Delaware Bay
(though astronomical tides here are slightly further from minor
flooding thresholds) with the high tide cycle Tuesday evening.
For tidal portions of the Delaware river, spotty minor tidal
flooding is possible. Along the northeastern Chesapeake Bay, the
northeasterly and even northerly flow, would favor lower tide
levels, so tidal flooding is not expected.
Easterly flow redevelops on Wednesday, so another round of
widespread minor tidal flooding will be possible with the high
tide Wednesday evening, primarily for the Atlantic Coast and the
Delaware Bay.
