What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

A cold front and associated weak area of surface low pressure approached the mid-Atlantic on June 14. A seasonably warm air mass was present ahead of the front, allowing a moderate amount of instability to build over the mid-Atlantic. Moderate to strong wind shear was also present thanks to the presence of a robust upper level disturbance approaching the region. This disturbance, along with the front, provided sufficient forcing for scattered to widespread convection to develop in the interior mid-Atlantic and propagate towards the coast. Some storms became strong to severe in the rather favorable convective environment, posing a primary risk of damaging winds along with some hail. Convection also continued well into the overnight over portions of the area thanks to the good shear and forcing, with convection eventually moving offshore in the pre-dawn hours of the 15th.

What forecasters said that day

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over eastern Ontario will progress to the east with its
associated cold front forecast to pass through our region late
tonight into early Tuesday morning. The low should then move
northeastward towards Canada's Maritime Provinces on Tuesday and
Tuesday night. A secondary cold front will on Wednesday evening with
high pressure arriving in its wake for Thursday and Friday. Another
cold front is expected to approach from the northwest on Saturday
and it should pass through our region on Saturday night and could
stall just to our south into Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
215 pm update: Grids have been updated for Severe Thunderstorm
Watch 270, in effect through 9 pm EDT for all of eastern PA,
northern and central NJ, and New Castle County in DE. Damaging
winds are the main threat, but marginally severe hail cannot be
ruled out. Main timing for our CWA looks to be 4 pm onward from
north to south.

We should see clearing from SW-NE through this afternoon,
opening the door for diurnal destabilization with portions of
the area warming up to near 80 degrees and MLCAPE values likely
exceeding 1500 J/kg (in areas that see clearing). The primary
synoptic forcing, associated with an amplifying shortwave and
surface cold front, will likely remain upstream of our area
through at least early afternoon so confidence in convective
coverage for this period is relatively low. That being said, any
storms that do form will have the potential to produce gusty
winds, small hail, and brief heavy rainfall given the
aforementioned instability, 45kts of bulk shear, and dewpoints
in the mid 60s (although PWATs will remain a fairly meager 1.3
inches or so).

Latest guidance along with the convection developing over
western PA this morning, lend more confidence to a sped up time
frame on the potential for severe weather. The latest CAMs are
showing storms firing up to our west and moving into our area
later this afternoon and continuing into this evening as the
front crosses the region.

They largely depict one or more linear convective features
moving towards the area and this evolution seems reasonable
given the strong mid-lvl flow and associated shear (500mb winds,
and 0-6km shear will be in the 90-95th percentile for mid June)
which should help support convective organization and
maintenance. Although we may see a shallow nocturnal surface
inversion form, reasonably steep lapse rates above this shallow
layer should support wind gusts reaching the surface in any
well- organized convection. SPC highlights this potential for
damaging winds by placing the majority of our area in a slight
risk for severe weather today (mostly for the evening into the
early overnight period). Given the fast propagation of the
system, convective mode, and strong flow aloft, damaging winds
look to be the primary threat although hail will also be
possible. The tornado threat will be limited by the weak low-lvl
wind fields (the wind field is very "mid-lvl heavy" in this
event). Heavy rain is certainly a concern with any stronger
convection with some signal for 1-2+ inch an hour rates, however
suspect that the quick system motion will make the hydro threat
secondary to the wind threat.

The main forecast uncertainties are both the timing of the
latter round of convection, and also its spatial coverage. For
example, the latest CAMS have a spread of nearly 4 hours in
timing the QLCS passage which is not particularly surprising
given that the quick system motion, combined with the potential
for convectively-driven propagation effects related to cold
pools are a recipe for timing discrepancies. Additionally the
timing situation is further complicated by the fact that several
CAMS depict separate northern and southern linear segments
developing, while other CAMS show only a more consolidated
southern segment impacting our area. Generally suspect that the
most likely period for a potential QLCS would be 00- 06Z with
the best chance of severe winds being roughly TTN southward,
however if the northern segment is able to get going the risk
could both extend further northward and also begin earlier.

For Tuesday, the axis of a short wave rotating around the
trough is forecast to pass overhead early on Tuesday afternoon.
As a result, we will keep a chance of showers in the forecast.
There will continue to be some weak instability at that time so
we will also mention a slight chance of thunder.
&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The period from Tuesday night through Thursday will feature a fairly
sharp mid level trough extending southward from Quebec over the
eastern states. The main axis of this trough looks to pass through
by Tuesday night resulting in mainly dry weather for this time
period.

Tuesday night into Wednesday, the region will be situated between
high pressure over the midwest and low pressure over Atlantic
Canada. This will set up a dry air advection pattern with lowering
dew points and skies that will generally be mainly clear to partly
cloudy. Lows Tuesday night will be mainly in the 50s to around 60
with highs Wednesday mainly in the 70s to near 80.

High pressure builds in for Wednesday night and Thursday bringing
continuing mainly clear skies with temperatures a little on the cool
side for this time of year as lows will be mainly in the 50s with
highs mainly in the 70s.
&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The mid level trough moves out to sea Thursday night with some
ridging from the southwest and west arriving overhead on Friday.
Another mid level trough is expected to progress from Ontario and
the Great Lakes through the northeastern states over the weekend.

At the surface, high pressure is forecast to slide off the coast
Thursday night into Friday. It should remain dry Friday with
readings likely getting into the lower and middle 80s at most
locations as the return flow on the back side of the high begins to
bring warmer air into our region.

A cold front associated with the weekend's mid level trough is
anticipated to approach from the northwest on Saturday before
passing through our region on Saturday night. As a result, we will
mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms at that time for
Saturday afternoon/evening. The front may stall near or just south
of the region Sunday into Monday but forecast details remain
uncertain at this time. Will keep in at least a slight chance of
showers across most of the region for both days.

.AVIATION /19Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through this afternoon...Mainly VFR conditions expected with
MVFR cigs scattering out across the region. Isolated
thunderstorms remain possible with increasing chances from
northwest to southeast from 21Z onward. SW winds 5-10kts. High
confidence with lower confidence in timing and coverage of
thunderstorms.

Tonight... Thunderstorms will progress eastward later this
afternoon into this evening with the potential for some of the
to become strong to severe, and continuing through the early
overnight period. Best timing is generally between 23Z- 05Z,
before the storms exit to the east of the terminals. Strong,
gusty winds with the potential for small hail through tonight
along with low MVFR to IFR cigs and vis. Conditions remain low
MVFR to IFR (possibly LIFR at times) behind the storms and
continuing through the rest of the night. Southwest winds ahead
of the storms may become slightly more southerly before becoming
light and variable overnight. Winds will start to trend more to
the northwest towards morning. Moderate confidence in the
overall forecast, low confidence in timing/coverage of storms.

Tuesday...MVFR/IFR conditions expected to continue through
14-15Z before improvement to VFR starts to occur. Northwest
winds around 5 to 10 knots int he morning will increase to 10 to
15 knots with gusts around 20 knots through the afternoon.
Slight chance for some showers or thunderstorms but confidence
to low to include even a VC at this time. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday...VFR. Northwest wind around 10 knots. High
confidence.

Thursday...VFR. Northwest wind 5 to 10 knots. High confidence.

Friday...VFR. Southwest wind around 10 knots. High confidence.

Saturday...Mainly VFR except restrictions possible in late day
showers/storms. SW winds 10 to 15 knots. Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Sub-SCA conditions will prevail through Monday night with seas
running 2-3 ft and southerly winds around 10-15kts. There will
be potential for thunderstorms with locally strong winds tonight
over all waters.

Outlook...

Tuesday through Friday...No marine headlines are anticipated.

Saturday...Southwest winds will increase and could get near SCA
levels by late day.

Rip currents...

The risk of dangerous rip currents is expected to remain
borderline Low-Moderate through Tuesday given 2ft breakers, and
medium-period low amplitude shore-perpendicular easterly swell
For now will go LOW risk for today (Monday) and MODERATE risk
for Tuesday, but in reality both days should feature similar
near-shore conditions.
