Tropical Storm Elsa approached the mid-Atlantic states from the south on July 8. Downstream of Elsa, a warm and moist environment was present. A slow moving frontal boundary also resided over northern New Jersey, northern Pennsylvania, and into New York. This frontal system provided forcing for convective development over the mid-Atlantic, in fairly close proximity but unrelated to Tropical Storm Elsa. With strong instability and weak to moderate wind shear, some of the storms became severe as they organized into linear and multi-cellular clusters. Deep layer southerly flow in advance of Elsa caused storms to move northward as opposed to a more typical eastward motion. Damaging wind was the main hazard associated with these storms, with several strong downbursts noted. Storm activity eventually weakened and moved north of the region by evening as Elsa moved in.

.SYNOPSIS...
Our region will be positioned in between High Pressure over the
North Atlantic and low pressure over the Great Lakes through
today. Tonight through Friday morning, the center of tropical
system Elsa is expected to pass over or near our region. A cold
front approaching from the northwest is expected to arrive on
Friday night. This front is anticipated to stall nearby over the
weekend before lifting to the north early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The Tropical Storm Watches were upgraded to warnings with the
500 AM cycle.
We will continue to experience the calm before the storm this
morning with mainly high clouds overhead along with patchy
stratocumulus over parts of eastern Pennsylvania and northern
New Jersey.
A mid level trough is forecast to drift eastward across the
Great Lakes today and Friday. A remnant surface boundary
extended to the northwest of our area early this morning. As the
trough moves closer to our region, showers and thunderstorms
will likely develop in the vicinity of the surface feature. It
is anticipated to drift southeastward into Berks County, the
Lehigh Valley, the Poconos and northwestern New Jersey this
afternoon. Locally heavy rain is possible.
The boundary should continue to linger in our region tonight as
Tropical Storm Elsa and the moisture associated with it
approaches from the southwest. Showers and thunderstorms with
rain heavy at times are expected in our region. The potential
for heavy rain continues into Friday morning, then the system
and its moisture will move away to our northeast from late
Friday morning into Friday afternoon. However, lingering showers
and thunderstorms are expected at that time.
Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches with local amounts to 6 inches
are anticipated for the coastal plain. Areas farther inland
should receive 1 to 2 inches of rain with local amounts up to 3
inches. As a result, the entire region remains under a Flash
Flood Watch.
Highs today are forecast to be mainly in the 80s. Lows tonight
should range from the upper 60s to the lower 70s. Highs on
Friday are expected to be mostly in the lower and middle 80s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The departing Elsa leaves a building H5/H7 ridge behind it as
it moves away from the area. A couple lingering showers across
Nrn/central NJ Fri evening will be the only precip between Fri
evening and Sat evening. A couple showers may arrive across the
region overnight Sat into Sun, but pops are only in the slight
chc range for now. Above normal temps Fri night will be replaced
by normal readings for Sat/Sat night.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A rather unsettled period for the end of the weekend and into
next week. A strong Bermuda-type high remain offshore and will
occasionally strengthen and ridge back across the Middle
Atlantic. Meanwhile, a trough/low across the Plains and Ohio
Valley region will remain in place through early next week and
then eject out across the Great Lakes area.
Precipitation will mostly be showery in nature with late
afternoon and evening hours favored. Best chances are for the
periods Sun-Mon and Tue. Chances for showers lessen towards the
middle./late parts of next week.
Temperatures will become closer to normal during later Sat and
it will remain into Sunday. Remembering, of course, that we are
in the climatological warmest part of the year. Humidity levels
will become more comfortable too. By next week, the heat and
humidity will return with daytime max temps returning to above
normal and highs close to 90 in many areas again. The humidity
levels will become more uncomfortable next week too.

Today...Mainly VFR. However, showers and thunderstorms
approaching from the northwest should impact KRDG and KABE with
lower conditions at that time. Southwest wind around 10 knots.

Tonight...Conditions lowering to MVFR and IFR in showers and
scattered thunderstorms. The rain will be heavy at times. Winds
generally backing from southeast to northeast, then to northwest
