What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

A weak cold front dissipated west of the mid-Atlantic on June 4. However, a lingering surface trough slowly moved through the region. With a lingering warm and moist air mass in place, the surface trough caused convection to develop, starting early in the afternoon. Despite weak wind shear, storms steadily increased in organization, aided by favorable mesoscale interactions. Several storms would go on to pose a threat for damaging winds and hail. Storms eventually coalesced into multiple linear segments which posed a continued wind damage threat. Storms moved offshore by early to mid evening, with a drier air mass behind them.

What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before the first event, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Jun 4, 8:25 AM EST, 4 hours 42 minutes earlier.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will cross the region later today. High pressure will
become established over the Western Atlantic over the weekend and
will remain in place through the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Clouds over the area are beginning to lift and thin out a bit.
Otherwise, forecast is mostly on track.

Low pressure over the Great Lakes will track east, and a diffuse
frontal boundary extends south of it through the Ohio Valley,
and is associated with a weak upper trough.

The upper-level trough will migrate eastward today, but it will
be running into strong ridging in the western Atlantic. Thus,
it will be in the process of deamplifying and becoming more
positively-tilted with time. The attendant surface boundary
will be weakening as it approaches the area today. Nevertheless,
sufficient subsynoptic lifting mechanisms (including
convergence along the boundary) are expected to generate another
round of convection this afternoon along/east of the higher
terrain. The extent of the convection is the first forecast
concern, as the weakening nature of the synoptic-scale lift
combines with questions regarding diurnal destabilization from
the residual cloudiness this morning to suggest limitations in
overall coverage. Convection-allowing models are quite variable
with convective coverage this afternoon. Currently thinking that
coverage will be lower than yesterday, but should be high
enough to justify chance to low-end likely PoPs across the area
this afternoon (highest in the north, closer to the track of the
midlevel vort max).

Second question will be the intensity of the storms. Model
soundings continue to present some inhibiting factors for a more
robust severe threat, including weak flow in the lowest 2-4 km
(generally at or below 20 kt) and residual weak midlevel lapse
rates. Some cooling should occur in the midlevels with time as
the vort max approaches, and my suspicion is that models are
underplaying this a tad. Should this be the case, and if pockets
of insolation can heat the boundary layer by this afternoon,
MLCAPE around or even in excess of 1000 J/kg could develop by
peak heating. This may compensate somewhat for the weak flow in
the lower troposphere. Deep-layer shear may also organize
convection, at least in a transient sense. As such,
isolated/brief severe storms with damaging wind gusts are
possible this afternoon, though this is by no means a sure bet.
SPC has maintained a marginal risk for the southern half or so
of the CWA today.

Once the vort max moves east of the region this evening,
chances for convection will end quickly (especially with
nocturnal stabilization). Aside from some potential for patchy
fog overnight (primarily if more widespread precipitation occurs
than is currently forecast), tonight should be uneventful.

Forecast highs today are right around model consensus...in the
upper 70s to lower 80s. Lows tonight will be quite mild, as
there should be little cooling/drying upstream of the decaying
surface front, with values generally in the 60s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure settles over the Western Atlantic on Saturday,
becoming well established through the weekend. With the high in
place, we will see a return flow develop across our region and that
signals an increase in temperatures along with increasing dewpoints.
850mb temps will be in the mid teens, signaling that we can
start to expect some daytime max temps in the 90s.

The heat wave looks to start with Saturday as highs reach into the
upper 80s to lower 90s across the forecast area. While we will have
little to no cloud cover heading through Saturday night, overnight
lows will remain warm in the southwest flow dropping into the mid to
upper 60s.

On Sunday, the flow deepens and we see the temperatures rise even
more, reaching well into the low to mid 90s. With dew points on the
rise though, it will start to feel a bit steamy outside. Sunday
night will be even warmer than Saturday night as many places,
especially areas in the urban corridor, will struggle to drop below
70 overnight.

While it will be hot inland this weekend, the shore will be only
slightly more bearable with highs in the mid to upper 80s on
Saturday, and upper 80s to around 90 on Sunday. A sea breeze may
develop Sunday afternoon, which would provide further relief.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The heat continues as we head through the week with the high moving
little (if at all) over the Atlantic. 850mb temps remain between 15C
to 20C, so expect highs to be in the low to mid 90s Monday through
at least Wednesday. The high remains offshore but the ridging across
the Mid_atlantic starts to break down a bit around midweek, which
should help to break the heat down a little. By Thursday, highs
should start to drop into the upper 80s. Additionally, the dew
points start to drop off some as head later into the week, providing
some relief there as well. Sea breezes in the afternoon may provide
some relief from the heat down the shore.

The need for any heat headlines will need to be monitored,
especially as this looks to be our first foray into a slightly
longer stretch of hot and humid weather.

Some convection, mainly diurnally driven, will be possible in the
afternoons through much of the week.

.AVIATION /13Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This morning...CIG continue through this morning with primarily
MVFR gradually becoming mostly VFR by midday. Southwest winds 5
to 10 kt. Low confidence, with several TAF amendments likely
through 16z.

This afternoon...Conditions becoming primarily VFR. A chance of
showers and storms, though coverage is expected to be
isolated/scattered and timing is very uncertain. As such, no
inclusion of thunder or TEMPO groups in the TAFs at this time.
Southwest winds around 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...Any remaining showers/storms should dissipate by sunset,
with mainly VFR prevailing thereafter. Winds light and variable.
There may be some patchy fog overnight if winds become nearly calm
and if precipitation coverage is higher than expected during the
day. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday through Monday...VFR conditions expected. West to
southwest winds 5 to 10 knots. Sea breezes possible in the
afternoon, mainly at KACY and KMIV. Some fog is possible during
the late night and early mornings. High confidence.

Tuesday...VFR conditions expected. Showers and thunderstorms
possible in the afternoon. Southwest to west winds 5 to 10 knots.
Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Seas will hover around 4 feet today and may approach 5 feet well
offshore. South to southwest winds of 10 to 20 kt are expected
today, diminishing somewhat tonight.

There is a chance of showers/storms through this evening, with the
best chances early this morning off the Delaware and southern New
Jersey coast and again this afternoon as more storms initiate on
land and approach the waters through early evening. Chances will
diminish quickly near/after sunset. Erratic winds/waves should be
expected in proximity to any storms that develop.

Outlook...

Saturday through Thursday...Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions
expected through the period.

Rip Currents...

For today, the risk of rip currents along the New Jersey shore
is expected to be moderate due to southwesterly winds of 10 to
20 mph with some higher gusts. For coastline facing
predominantly southward, the rip current risk will be especially
elevated. For the Delaware beaches, the risk is expected to be
low. Similar conditions are expected on Saturday.
