Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1003 AM PDT Sun Sep 12 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Dry and warm conditions are expected for the week ahead with afternoon highs averaging several degrees above normal before trending closer to normal next weekend. && .UPDATE...Excessive Heat Warning for the Colorado River Valley went into effect at 10am this morning, and will last through Monday night, with above-average temperatures expected for this late in the season, coupled with recreation on area lakes lending to a risk of higher heat-related emergency calls. Always remember to hydrate, even if you're not thirsty, and especially if consuming either caffeine or alcohol. No changes made to the forecast this morning, as it looks to be in good shape. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...152 AM PDT Sun Sep 12 2021/ .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday. Looking for break in the monsoon action this week with dry conditions forecast area wide beginning today as none of the model guidance have precipitation forecast in our area. Time will tell if this marks the end of our local monsoon season. Although we are not forecasting any showers or storms today, there will likely be some cumulus buildups over the mountains in Mohave County this afternoon with lingering mid level moisture. Weak troughing and its associated jet moves into northern California and Oregon today sending some high clouds across northern Nevada but this shortwave should have little to no impact for our area which we expect to be mostly sunny. Although not really a concern, southerly winds are expected to increase today with gusts generally in the 20-30 mph range across parts of western San Bernardino, Inyo, Nye, and Lincoln counties. Less wind elsewhere, generally in the 10-20 mph range. We are expected a 2-4 degree increase in temperatures today that linger into Monday but heat risk across the majority of the area will be in the low-moderate range. The exception will be along the Colorado River Valley from Lake Mohave south to Parker Dam where heat risk is forecast to be high today and high to very high on Monday. As a result, an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect for this area through Monday. No extension of the heat risk product will be needed as forecast temperatures fall around 3-4 degrees on Tuesday resulting in a drop in heat risk into the moderate category along the Colorado River Valley. Other than temperatures cooling slightly on Tuesday, no other weather issues are expected except for afternoon breezes. Winds relax on Monday across the northwest CWA and generally increase elsewhere but remain well below advisory level. Light winds are forecast Tuesday. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday. The entire period looks dry with temperatures starting out 5 to 7 degrees above normal Wednesday. Still quite a bit of uncertainty regarding possible affects of trough moving out of the Gulf of Alaska next weekend. NBM forecasts a gradually lowering in temperatures with values ending up closer to mid September normals next weekend. Depth of trough will play a key factor in our wind forecast but as of now ensembles indicate a slight uptick with gusts generally running 20-30 mph. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Prevailing south-southwest wind components and a clear sky will continue today through Monday. Speeds of 6-8 knots can be expected in the overnight and morning hours and 12-22 knots in the afternoon. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...No significant weather is expected across the region under a dry southwest to westerly flow aloft.
