Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 0935 AM PST Thu Nov 25 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Cool and blustery conditions are expected for Thanksgiving day with the strongest winds expected near the Colorado River Valley. Temperatures will will gradually climb over the weekend and into next week as a large ridge of high pressure builds over the region with dry conditions prevailing. && .UPDATE...Strong northerly winds will continue in the Colorado River Valley through this evening, with a Lake Wind Advisory in effect for this area through 6 PM PST /7 PM MST. As of 17Z, winds at the Laughlin/Bullhead City and Needles Airports were 37 mph gusting to 45 mph and 25 gusting to 32 mph, respectively. Outside of winds in the Colorado River Valley, you can expect seasonal temperatures with clear skies across the region today. Temperatures are still expected to warm up as we head into the weekend with a warmer than average start to December in store for next week. No changes to the forecast are necessary at this time. .SHORT TERM...through Friday night. Clear skies dominate the region this evening behind a departing shortwave trough which delivered the cooler conditions to the area. Despite the clear conditions, blustery north winds have persisted overnight which has thus far kept most of Mohave County above freezing. Meanwhile, further north where winds have dropped off more substantially across the Great Basin and Owens Valley, temps have already cooled well into the twenties. With several more hours of darkness left, a few spots may still dip to near the freezing mark in Mohave county, especially if the wind calms even briefly. Otherwise, cool and breezy weather in store for today, with especially gusty conditions focused down the Colorado River Valley. Pressure gradients will begin to relax late Thursday and into Friday with northerly breezes becoming confined to the Colorado River Valley. Temperatures Friday will remain cool, though technically right around normal for late November, but cooler than the very warm conditions that have prevailed for most of the month. .LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday. With the exit of our current cold and windy system, a ridge will set up over the Pacific Ocean and extend eastward over the Desert Southwest. As a result of this ridge, we will experience mostly clear skies, calm winds, and temperatures returning to well above seasonal averages. Numerous daily high and daily warm low temperatures will be in jeopardy next week if the forecast continues to trend upward. The NBM currently boasts a 69% chance of Las Vegas tying a daily high temperature record on Sunday as well as a 64% chance of *breaking* the daily high temperature record on Wednesday, making for an unseasonably warm start to December. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Gusty northerly winds have persisted overnight with speeds over 30kts being observed. The gustiness should end and winds diminish to northeast at 10-15kts by late morning. A more typical diurnal wind pattern should return after sunset with winds switching around to the southwest at 8kts or less followed by northeast winds at similar speeds Friday morning. Skies will remain mostly clear through the TAF period. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Strong northerly winds will continue at KIFP and KEED today with gusts of 35 to 40kts possible. Winds will decrease this evening and overnight, but a few gusts to 25kts will still be possible into Friday morning, especially at KIFP. For the other TAF sites, winds will be lighter today than Wednesday. The Vegas area sites will see north to northeast winds around 15kts through this afternoon, followed by lighter speeds following typical diurnal patterns overnight. KBIH and KDAG can expect winds of 10kts or less.
