Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 218 PM PDT Fri Aug 13 2021 ..SYNOPSIS...High pressure will bring near to record heat to the silver state this weekend. Thunderstorms will occur each day for the weekend as well. A trough will bring a change in the weather and cooler temperatures early next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday. High pressure will continue to dominate the Great Basin bringing scorching heat to the silver state. Highs are generally looking to be in the uppers 90s to low 100s but a few spots including Winnemucca could reach into the mid 100s. This will put the highs near or at record values some of which have stood strong since 1933. The overnight lows will also be hot with the coldest areas only in the low to mid 60s with the rest even warmer. A Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for Humboldt County Saturday to Sunday which will see the highest heat. A Heat Advisory has been issued for the same time frame for NW Nye, N Lander and Eureka, and eastern most Elko counties as well, for these areas will also see hot conditions. This heat does pose a health risk to everyone in the Warning and Advisory areas, especially for those working outdoors and are sensitive to heat. Be sure to find adequate cooling and stay hydrated this weekend to stave off heat related illness. Also do not leave children or pets within unattended vehicles as these can quickly see the temperatures become lethal. The high pressure has brought moisture to the silver state that will continue the daytime thunderstorms through the weekend. Most of the storms will be dry but a few can produce a small amount of wetting rainfall. Central NV will have the best chance at getting the thunderstorms but a few can form in northern NV. Any storm will be capable of producing gusty outflow winds that could be strong. Ambient winds will be gusty as well but not particularly strong with gusts only up to 20 mph. Haze will remain in the silver state as the western fires continue to produce smoke that drifts over us. .LONG TERM...Sunday night through next Friday Synopsis: Dry and wet thunderstorm activity is likely through mid- week primarily in central and eastern Nevada. A cold front associated with a low pressure system in Canada is forecasted to affect our area late next week. Monday and Tuesday: Breezy conditions are expected in northern Nevada as trofs associated with the Canadian low cross this region. Wind gusts are forecasted to range from 20 to 25 mph on both days. Relative humidity values in the upper teens combined with these wind values could cause an elevated fire weather risk on Monday. Dry and wet thunderstorms are forecasted for central and eastern Nevada too; especially in White Pine and northern Nye counties. High temperatures are forecasted to range from the upper 90s to low 100s Monday and the mid to upper 90s on Tuesday. Wednesday to Friday: A cold front is forecasted to cross into northern Nevada Wednesday and slowly move south and east. The models have delayed the front's arrival into Nevada resulting in low confidence of its timing on Wednesday. The front is forecasted to bring drier air and breezy conditions. Daytime temperatures are forecasted to range from the upper 80s/low 90s late next week. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions will continue for all TAF sites through the overnight. VCTS will continue at KELY, while outflow winds of 35KT will be possible at KELY and KEKO during the early evening. VCTS will again be forecast for KELY tomorrow afternoon. && .FIRE WEATHER...The weekend will see extremely hot conditions across all the fire zones. This has lead to Heat Warnings for Humboldt County and Heat Advisory for N Lander and Eureka, Easternmost Elko, and NW Nye counties Saturday to Sunday. It is advised that adequate cooling and hydration is needed to stave off heat related illness. The hot conditions will be coupled with dry conditions which will be most prominent in the NW fire zones of 424, 437, and 438. The winds however will not be strong with gusts expected to reach only up to 20 mph. All fire zones can see thunderstorm activity to some degree through the weekend and into early next week. Most of these storms will be dry in nature but a few could produce a wetting rain. The main threat from the storms will be gusty outflow winds which could be strong. Change does look to be on the horizon early next week as a trough enters the west and could bring cooler and wetter conditions along with stronger winds. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
