Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 231 AM PDT Wed Apr 7 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Pleasant conditions are expected today as high pressure builds over the region. A cold front will bring gusty winds and cooler temperatures to primarily northeastern Nevada Thursday. Another weak cold front is expected Sunday with dry conditions persisting through the weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Friday. Ridge axis over the region along with rising 500 mb heights and a west to southwest surface flow will promote rising temperatures with highs today reaching into the upper 60s and lower 70s in some lower valleys. Another cold front is expected to move through northern Nevada Thursday bringing stronger gradient flow and gusty surface winds to northeastern Nevada in the afternoon. Winds from the west-northwest around 20 mph with gusts 30-35 mph can be expected across most of Elko county Thursday afternoon. A few mid and upper-level clouds will accompany the upper-trough as it moves through the area but precipitation will be non-existent. Lighter winds are expected Friday along with temperatures rising by several degrees into the mid to upper 60s. Lows will typically reach into the upper 20s to lower 30s tonight with primarily 20s Thursday night. .LONG TERM...Friday night through next Tuesday The long term period is expected to stay dry through next Tuesday, but breezier winds may accompany a cold front over the weekend. A cold front extending from its parent low pressure system in southern Canada sweeps through the state Saturday. Any precipitation associated with it is unlikely to make it into our CWA, and should stay just to our North. However, this front may bring some gustier winds with it, particularly on Saturday and possibly into Sunday. While they don’t yet look like they will reach values that would warrant any products, it will be interesting to see how dry the air is when it pools in to our state. As mentioned before, the temperature change from the cold front doesn’t look like it will be a dramatic drop. Afternoon highs should mostly be in the 60s and 70s over the long term, but higher elevations in northern Elko county possibly “cool off” to the 50s on Sunday. Overnight lows start off in the 20s and 30s on Saturday and Sunday, but most of us should see 30s by early Tuesday. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at all terminals over the next 24 hours.
