Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 406 AM PDT Sun Apr 25 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Cloudy and cooler today with valley rains over much of northern NV by the early afternoon hours. Rain showers will expand into central NV later this afternoon and evening. Southerly winds will be gusty this afternoon across much of central NV. Precipitation continues over most of central NV overnight with rain changing to snow into Monday morning, with best chances for snow accumulation early Monday being across central NV. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday. An upper level low currently centered along the Northern CA and Southern OR coastline will drift to the southeast over Northern CA later today. With the approaching system, southwesterly flow aloft is spreading over all of NV, bringing increasing clouds to the region. A frontal boundary will set up across northern NV through this morning with some light valley rain showers over mainly the northern portions of Humboldt and Elko Counties. Out ahead of this developing frontal boundary, southerly winds will intensify over much of east- central NV later this morning and continue to gust through the early evening hours. Strongest winds today are expected across the southern half of White Pine County, including Great Basin Park, with gusts generally in the 35 to 45 mph range. By the late afternoon hours the cold front (oriented in a line from SW Lander County, Northeastward up through Eureka County and into the Southern portion of the Ruby Mountains) will gradually begin drifting SE. NBM continues to show an increasingly upward trend in QPF amounts along and near this slow moving frontal boundary, from later this afternoon through this evening and the overnight hours. Rain is expected to change over to snow over much of central NV tonight, with latest guidance showing slightly higher snow amounts for the mountains and higher summits in central NV, including the Highway 50 corridor where 1-3 or possibly 1-4 inches of snowfall are possible. Snow accumulation on roadways however is still expected to be below an inch due to warm surfaces ahead of the approaching system. Current Metro Roadcast guidance for potential snow accumulations along Highway 50 continue to show snow on roadways at less than a quarter inch for the late night and early Monday morning period. Changing snow amounts and levels for tonight into early Monday will be something to keep an eye on today as newer model runs come in. Monday afternoon the mostly cloudy skies continue across the CWA as the upper level low continues to drift SE, centering over NV. Valley rains are likely in most areas Monday. Instability also sets up over most of Northern NV late Monday morning and through the afternoon hours. Have added slight chance of thunderstorms to Humboldt County, most of Elko County along with portions of Lander and Eureka Counties through 5PM Monday. Monday night the upper level low will drift south, with precipitation diminishing overnight from north to south. There may be a few lingering light showers on Tuesday, mainly over central NV. .LONG TERM...Tuesday night through next Sunday. As the low continues to exit our state off to the south and east, Tuesday night, a ridge of high pressure will begin to gradually make its presence known Wednesday and reside over the state through Friday. During this time temperatures will gradually climb starting in the upper 60s to lower 70s on Wednesday, warming into the mid to upper 70s on Thursday, and peaking in the mid 70s to mid 80s by Friday. Friday afternoon or evening the ridge will begin to break down, under pressure from an approaching trough from the Pacific Northwest. Saturday will see increasing clouds as the day progresses. Forecasted highs are still expected to reach into the mid to upper 70s during the day, with an slight chance of light rain showers for portions of northern and eastern Nevada, Saturday afternoon and evening. These shower chances are currently expected to linger into Sunday, and may expand in coverage. Lows Tuesday night are expected to be in the 20s and 30s. With the approaching ridge of high pressure, Wednesday through Friday, lows are expected to be warmer ranging from the upper 30s to upper 40s for many locations. && .AVIATION...-SHRA/-SHSN will be possible across the northern sites of KWMC-KBAM-KEKO beginning early Sunday morning with accompanying restrictions to VSBY/CIGS. Light precipitation will spread across the central sites during the latter portions of the morning.
