What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

A warm front moved northward across the mid-Atlantic early on October 25. A warm sector environment overspread the region, with temperatures rising well above seasonal values. A cold front began to slowly approach by late in the day, while cyclogenesis began to occur offshore in an increasingly baroclinic environment. With strengthening lift and strong wind fields, scattered convection developed across the region. Instability was limited but sufficient to sustained convection, and the strong wind fields helped some storms produce locally damaging winds. Convective activity gradually diminished through the later evening and early overnight hours as heating and forcing were lost.

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front has lifted north of the region ahead of an area of
low pressure approaching from the Ohio Valley. Meanwhile, a
coastal low will continue to develop and move northeast along
the Mid-Atlantic coast into the day Tuesday before moving out
to sea Wednesday. Weak high pressure will attempt to nose
southward into the region Thursday and Friday ahead of another
area of low pressure that looks to move across the region into
the upcoming weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
An initial batch of showers and thunderstorms was lifting
northward through northeastern Maryland, Delaware and southern
New Jersey early this evening. Additional precipitation was
approaching from the west and southwest.

Satellite images continue to clearly show the low over Ohio
starting to drift towards the south and east. Meanwhile, the
coastal low is developing off the Carolina coast and starting to
move towards the northeast.

The warm front quickly pushed north of the region earlier
today, leaving us in a warm sector where temperatures climbed
well into the 70s this afternoon.

Hi-res guidance shows the storms increasing in coverage as we
move through this evening with the bulk of any storms across the
area overnight. Storms will start to lose their oomph and
transition to more of a stratiform rain as we head towards
morning, likely with the thunder potential ending after about
3-4am.

Just how much the coastal low will deepen and just where that
occurs to our east remains a big factor when considering just
how far inland the heavy precipitation will push across our
region. Guidance has pushed some of the heavy rain further to
the north and east and we have expanded the watch to better
capture this area. Additionally, there continues to be
indications that some areas may see a good 2-4 inches of rain,
with some areas having the potential for higher amounts. The
main area of concern hasn't changed much, mostly coastal and
northern NJ, through the threat may have shifted slightly north
and west. The bulk of the rain should be from late this evening
through much of the day on Tuesday. With heavy rain expected,
flooding may be exacerbated by clogged storm drains as we are
starting to see leaves fall from the trees across the region.

As we go through Tuesday, the potential for heavy rain will
continue as a cold front starts to make its way through the
region. With the low deepening offshore, the pressure gradient
will tighten and winds will increase, especially along the
coast, though it looks like gusts will fall shore of wind
advisory levels. With wet ground and leafed out trees, there may
be some potential for trees or limbs to come down.

The low slightly retrogrades Tuesday night before starting to
pull to the east early Wednesday morning. Precipitation should
be ending from west to east through Tuesday night though the
gradient will remain tight and conditions will remain breezy
across the region.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Gradual clearing will occur Wednesday as the coastal low
occludes and slowly pulls off to the north and east. Guidance
has trended a little slower with the system's departure through
the day, but the counterclockwise trajectory of the center of
the low should remain far enough offshore to preclude any
precip, save for the immediate coastline Wednesday. The bigger
story will be the winds for Wednesday with northerly winds
gusting from 20 to 25 mph at times with the rather tight
pressure gradient behind the coastal low pressure center. An
otherwise seasonable day with highs in the low 60s north to mid
60s from the urban corridor south.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure will begin to nose southward from Ontario and the
Great Lakes Thursday behind the departing coastal low with a
cool north wind continuing over the forecast area. Meanwhile a
closed 500 mb low with a vertically stacked broad surface low
beneath it will move across the Mid-Mississippi and Tennessee
Valleys Thursday into Friday. A warm front will attempt to lift
through the region Friday into Friday night, but with high
pressure over the Canadian Maritimes, this will have to work
against a cold air damming set-up. This will funnel moisture
into the region from the Southeast Coast as the surface low
occludes over the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys.

Highs in will trend slightly cooler than average, especially
Friday from the upper 40s in the Poconos to the mid 60s across
Delmarva. Still little frost/freeze potential in the forecast
with ample moisture and no sign of a dry continental airmass to
really usher in a fall airmass yet. We are actually approaching
record late frosts across some of our climate sites.

.AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...Showers with embedded thunderstorms continue to move
into the region and expand in coverage after 02Z from southwest
to northeast. Both CIG and VSBY restriction to MVFR after this
timeframe and a drop to IFR possible near or after 04Z.
Conditions appear likely to drop fairly quickly as rain blossoms
over the region tonight. Light southeasterly winds will quickly
turn east then northeasterly into early Tuesday morning from 5
to 10 knots with gusts to 15 knots as low pressure develops
offshore. High confidence in a drop to at least MVFR but
moderate confidence in timing and if conditions drop to IFR.

Tuesday...MVFR with IFR possible, especially in the morning
hours with rain and showers across the region. Low clouds are
expected to stick around through the day with VSBY restrictions
even if breaks in the rain occurs. Northeasterly winds turning
northwesterly from 10 to 15 knots with gusts to 25 knots. High
confidence.

Tuesday night...MVFR with possible IFR conditions as rain
slowly moves off the east with the departure of the coastal low.
Northwesterly winds from 10 to 15 knots with gusts from 20 to
25 knots. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday and Wednesday night...Sub-VFR conditions in the
morning should gradually improve to VFR. Northerly winds from 10
to 15 knots. Moderate confidence.

Thursday and Thursday night...VFR. Northeasterly winds from 5
to 10 knots. High confidence.

Friday and Friday night...Sub-VFR conditions likely as rain
moves into the region along a warm front. Easterly winds from 10
to 15 knots with gusts from 20 to 25 knots. Moderate
confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
A Gale Warning is in effect.

Things ramp up tonight as a coastal low develops and moves up
the eastern seaboard. Seas may start to build tonight and may
approach 5 feet but are largely expected to remain below SCA
levels.

By early Tuesday morning, seas will build to 4 to 7 feet and
continue to build to 6 to 10 feet by Tuesday evening.

Northeast winds will increase tonight on the northern waters
into Tuesday, with some gusts near 25 to 30 knots by early
Tuesday morning. Winds may remain more to the northeast to north
across the northern waters while becoming northwest across the
central and southern waters. Winds will increase from 10 to 20
knots to 20 to 30 knots with gusts around 35 to 40 knots.

Outlook...

Wednesday...Gales continue in the morning with a Gale Warning
at least through 2 pm for the coastal waters and SCA conditions
on the Bay. Conditions will be showery, with potential for some
visibility restrictions as well in the morning. Seas from 7 to
10 feet.

Wednesday night...Advisory conditions for the Atlantic waters,
with north to northeast winds gusting to 30 kt and seas of 6 to
9 feet. Sub-advisory conditions are likely on the Delaware Bay.

Thursday...Sub-advisory winds out of the northeast, but seas
will likely remain above 5 feet on the Atlantic waters.

Thursday night and Friday...Strong northeast to east winds will
develop, with gales possible on the Atlantic waters on Friday.
Seas may build to 6 to 10 feet. Gale-force gusts may occur on
the lower Delaware Bay as well.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Complex low pressure is expected to strengthen off the Middle
Atlantic coast tonight and Tuesday before drifting farther out
to sea during the mid week period. Another low is forecast to
approach from the west and southwest late in the week.

The anticipated weather pattern should result in a developing
onshore flow along the northern and central parts of the New
Jersey coast from late tonight into Tuesday, with a more
variable flow in areas to the south. The wind along our entire
coast is expected to become northerly for Tuesday night and
Wednesday, before veering to the northeast and east for Thursday
and Friday.

While the strength of the onshore flow will vary during the
period, there will be little opportunity for water to drain away
from the coast this week. As a result, we will continue to
monitor for the possibility of minor flooding along the coasts
of New Jersey and Delaware, and along Delaware Bay. Fortunately,
the astronomical tides associated with the last quarter moon
will work in our favor. It will take a 2 foot departure at the
midday high tide, and a 3 foot departure at the overnight high
tide to cause minor flooding.

With the persistent nature of the onshore flow, we may
eventually see some minor flooding on the tidal Delaware River
and on the upper eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay as the week
progresses.
