What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

As strengthening low pressure tracked through the Great Lakes on March 28, a strong cold front approached the mid-Atlantic coast. A narrow ribbon of modest instability developed ahead of the front. With strong wind fields in place and strong forcing from the cold front, a line of convection developed. The minimal instability caused this to be a low-topped convective line with little, though not zero, lightning. However, the strong forcing and wind fields caused the line to become a fairly prolific producer of straight line wind damage. A number of severe wind gusts were measured, with numerous reports of tree, utility, and some structural damage.

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will sweep across the Mid Atlantic region this
evening and out to sea tonight while low pressure moves into
eastern Canada. High pressure will build across the Mid Atlantic
region Monday, then offshore Monday night into Tuesday. A cold
front will move across the east coast Wednesday into Wednesday
night, followed by a secondary cold front or surface trough on
Thursday. High pressure builds south of the region on Saturday,
before a weak clipper type system possibly affects the area
Saturday night into Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for southeastern
Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey, Delaware and
northeastern Maryland until 9:00 PM this evening.

Warm front north of the region and the cold front that has been
tracking east is moving through central Pennsylvania. It is
accompanied by a line of showers with embedded thunderstorms. An
increasingly warm and humid air mass lies over the region, with
surface dewpoints well in the 50s and climbing into the lower
60s, and temperatures are generally in the 60s to low 70s.

SB CAPE values range from 500-1000 J/kg. In addition, 0-6 km
Bulk Shear is around 60 kt, but is as high as 100 kt in the
vicinity of the approaching line of showers. Wind speeds at
925-850 mb are as high as 45-55 kt, so with breaks in the
clouds, south winds will become gusty into this evening.

PWATs range from 1.3-1.4 inches and may increase a bit over the
next couple of hours. Given the strong winds aloft, any storms
will be capable of locally heavy rain, but will move quickly
enough to prevent flooding from occurring unless training of
cells occurs.

That line of convection should intensify as it passes over the
area, given that it will be into an unstable air mass. The
window for convection and potential severe weather will occur
until about 8 or 9 PM.

Once the line moves offshore, precip tapers off fairly quickly
from west to east. Cold front passes through in the evening, and
winds abruptly shift from the south to the west and will
increase to 15-25 mph with 30-40 mph gusts. Although winds aloft
will range from 40-50 kt, not expecting strong enough mixing
during the overnight for widespread 50 mph gusts. A Wind
Advisory will not be issued as a result.

Gusty winds continue into Monday morning, gradually diminishing
further into the afternoon. Dry and sunny with lowering dew
points and high temps closer to normal, generally in the 50s.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
For Monday night through Tuesday night, high pressure continues
to move offshore Monday night and out to sea Tuesday into
Tuesday night. Dry weather will prevail through this period, and
as the pressure gradient increases between high pressure
offshore and an approaching cold front, winds on Tuesday will
become gusty, with wind gusts 20-30 mph possible.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The biggest concern in the extended forecast continues to be
the Wednesday and Wednesday night period. Afterward, mostly dry
weather is forecast.

Wednesday will likely begin the day dry, however, as the cold
front approaches from the west, showers will begin to overspread
the area as several short wave/vorticity impulses along with
enhanced moisture move across the area. As the front moves
across the area, an area of low pressure is forecast to develop
and move across the area later in the day and into the evening.
This could also enhance rainfall across the area. Some guidance
is indicating it is possible for 1-2 inches rainfall for some
areas from this storm.

The front will move offshore overnight Wednesday into Thursday,
while the low pressure moves out of New England and into
southeastern Canada. This will turn the flow to the northwest,
and the winds will become quite gusty between the low to our
north and high pressure across the central part of the country.
Winds could gust 20-30 mph at times. As the mid-level trough
swings across the area, low-mid level lapse rates steepen quite
sharply, while there will be some enhanced moisture move across
the area. So there will remain a chance of showers through the
day Thursday. Depending on how much cold air moves in across the
area, there will be some areas that mix with or change over to
snow. The most likely areas for this to occur would be portions
of northeastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey, although
it would not be surprising if snow mixes in elsewhere.

Precipitation should come to an end Thursday night as drier air
move into the region. This dry weather will persist for Friday
into the weekend as high pressure builds out of the Ohio River
Valley Friday and then across the southeast states Saturday.
Winds will remain gusty for Thursday night through Friday with
gusts 20 to 25 mph at times. While winds will remain breezy
Friday night into Saturday, the gusts will not be as strong.

On Saturday night, a weak clipper type system is forecast to
move just to our north. This will likely keep most of any
precipitation that occurs to our north, so we will keep
precipitation out of the forecast at this time.

.AVIATION /21Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This evening...Variable conditions are expected until about 01Z
with a line of showers and embedded thunderstorms moving across
our TAF sites from west to east. Southwest wind 10 to 15 knots
with gusts of 20 to 25 knots, becoming west 15 to 20 knots with
gusts of 25 to 30 knots in the wake of the precipitation. Medium
to high confidence.

Overnight...SHRA taper off and conditions improve to VFR fairly
quickly behind departing cold front. W-NW wind 15-20 kt with
25-35 kt gusts. Moderate confidence.

Monday...VFR. W-NW winds 15-20 kt with gusts up to 30 kt,
diminishing in the afternoon. High confidence.

.MARINE...
A line of showers and thunderstorms will move across the waters
this evening with an approaching cold front. South winds 15-20
kt with 20-30 kt gusts will abruptly shift to the west behind
the front and increase to 20-30 kt with gusts up to 40 kt. Will
continue with the Gale Warning.

Gales continue through Monday morning, eventually diminishing
to SCA levels in the afternoon.

OUTLOOK...

Monday night-Tuesday night...Conditions expected to remain
below advisory levels, although winds may gust around 20 knots
at times.

Wednesday...A cold front will move into the area, bringing a
chance of showers and thunderstorms, which may lead to locally
higher winds and waves. However, prevailing conditions likely
remain below advisory levels.

Wednesday night-Thursday...Cold front moves across the waters,
bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms, which may lead
to locally higher winds and waves. Winds expected to increase to
at least advisory levels, with a chance of gale force wind
possible.

Thursday night-Friday...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely
continue.
