.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front approaches tonight and slowly works its way
through the region on Saturday. The front will stall over the
Mid-Atlantic into the start of the new week as high pressure
builds into the region from the north. By the middle of next
week, that front lifts back north as a warm front as the
remnants of what is currently Tropical Depression Fred
potentially lifts along the Appalachians.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The showers and thunderstorms associated with the mid level
short wave trough were making their way across northeastern
Pennsylvania early this evening. They are expected to continue
weakening as they move into a somewhat more stable environment,
and as the sun begins to set.
Other than some stray showers, no convective activity is
expected this evening into tonight for southeastern Pennsylvania
and much of New Jersey.
Our main focus is on eastern Maryland and Delaware where
conditions remain quite unstable. Some strong pulse-type
thunderstorms were developing there early this evening. However,
the trend should turn downward with the loss of daytime
heating. Until that time, strong wind gusts, hail, locally heavy
rain, and dangerous cloud to ground lightning are possible. A
Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for our counties in
eastern Maryland until 8:00 PM.
The Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisory are set to expire
at 8:00 PM.
A shortwave trough across the Great Lakes continues to push an
area of low pressure and cold front across the Ohio Valley and
into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. This front has been at our
doorstep for several days with numerous rounds of decaying MCSs
making their way into our region. As high pressure finally
begins to retreat to our southwest into this weekend, this front
will push across the area through tomorrow afternoon but not
before more showers and thunderstorms make their way through the
CWA.
The front works its way through the area tomorrow, with the
best chances for thunderstorms being mostly south and east of
I-95 into the early afternoon. Most places north and west of
Philly look to remain dry tomorrow. Am a little surprised with
how quiet some of the CAMs are for tomorrow but still went with
chance PoPs for thunderstorms mostly south of I-78. MUCAPE
values from 1000 to 2000 J/kg would support thunderstorms but am
worried there may be too much residual cloud cover from today's
convection as some of the guidance seems to be indicating. The
SPC seems to highlight this trend with the only Marginal Risk
being across portions of Delmarva.
High temperatures tomorrow will still be hot, but 5 to 10
degrees cooler than today in the upper 80s to near 90. Southwest
winds will gradually shift west-northwest in the wake of the
front from 5 to 10 mph.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Cold front sags south into the Mid-Atlantic Saturday night as
high pressure builds over the Great Lakes and into eastern
Canada. Showers taper off from north to south in the evening,
but may linger over southern Delmarva.
Mostly dry and mild Sunday with highs around seasonal normals
and dew points dropping into the 50s. Some showers may linger
over far southern Delmarva due to its proximity to the departing
front.
High pressure moves into New England Sunday night. Conditions
remain dry across the majority of the forecast area.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High pressure moves into the Gulf of Maine early in the new
week and will remain in place through the end of the week.
Return flow sets up behind the departing high, and the frontal
boundary over the Mid- Atlantic lifts back north as a warm
front. Surface high pressure remains over the Gulf of Maine
while mid- level high pressure will be just off the Mid-Atlantic
coast. Several shortwaves will approach from the west, but due
to the positioning of this sprawling high pressure, it looks
like any showers and thunderstorms that develop and approach
will really only make it to the far western zones.
An aspect to watch is the track of what is currently Tropical
Depression Fred. Its remnants look to take a track up Florida
and the Southeast, then along the spine of the Appalachians
before emerging off the Mid-Atlantic coast. This could lead to
increasing humidity levels from the middle to the end of the
week, as well as showers that may result in locally heavy rain.
It is still quite early, so for now, will carry high chance PoPs
Wednesday through Thursday for this potential.
Another front may approach late next week.
