Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fort Worth TX 537 AM CDT Fri Aug 28 2020 .SHORT TERM... /NEW/ Update: /Through Tonight/ The previous discussion still hold for the overall trends with TD Laura, low-mid chances for convective rainfall across our East Texas and Central Texas counties generally south of Highway 84 by this afternoon and early evening. In addition, much hotter temperatures into the triple digits will combine with humidity across the eastern half of the area for some oppressive heat this afternoon and early evening with many areas along and east of I-35 seeing heat index values this afternoon between 106-111 degrees. Currently, a shortwave moving southward along the far western periphery of TD Laura's circulation near Jonesboro, Arkansas continues to generate some training showers and thunderstorms across particularly Henderson & Anderson counties this morning. Western parts of these counties have seen locally 1-2" of rain this morning and there is a Flood Advisory until 7 am CDT. Fortunately, activity is already lessening some across this area, but that part of SW Henderson/NW Anderson counties still have a blob of convective activity containing very heavy downpours. I expect a brief reprieve later this morning through the midday hours, before a few more storms develop on the tail-end of residual forcing across Central Texas. Considering the very hot and humid conditions, a strong storm or two containing very gusty downburst winds, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours will be possible. With a warm layer aloft and mid level lapse rates less than 6 deg C/km, I do not expect much in the way of a hail threat, though certainly some small hail can't be completely ruled out with the most robust updrafts this afternoon and early evening. Tonight will be much quieter with regard to showers and storms, but it will be very warm and humid with south-southeast winds around 10 mph. Many areas will be hard-pressed to fall below the upper 70s or lower 80s. Summer isn't over just yet! 05/ Previous Discussion: /Overnight Through Friday Night/ TD Laura was currently over north-central Arkansas this morning and all models have her remnants being picked up by stronger westerlies aloft through tonight. Her movement will initially continue to be very gradual and northeastward toward the western Ohio Valley today before racing east toward Central Appalachians as an extratropical system tonight. The only lingering impact from TD Laura across North and Central Texas will being one final disturbance moving southward across the region during the day with low convective chances continuing across our East Texas counties this morning, then across our Central Texas counties this afternoon and early evening. Thanks to much hotter temperatures expected today, any spotty showers and storms across Central Texas could reach strong levels with very gusty downbursts and frequent lighting if they can mature enough. As Laura's remnant low pressure continues moving away from the area, our mid level heights will begin rising as mid level ridging builds in from the west. This will allow for much hotter ambient temperatures between 100 to 107 degrees across all but our far East Texas counties. Throw in some downsloping compressional warming from veered southwesterly surface winds to add to the equation and you can expect a breezy and steamy afternoon today. A Heat Advisory will begin for the entire CWA this afternoon. Humidity will be relatively high east of Highway 281 resulting in heat index values rising to between 106-111 degrees. Meanwhile west of Highway 281, the advisory will be based more on ambient temperatures 104-107 degrees. Regardless, it's going to be VERY HOT! Prepare now to get any outdoor activities out of the way during the morning hours (if possible) because the heat is going to feel downright oppressive this afternoon. A much balmier night is expected Friday night. Lows will only fall to between 75-80 degrees across rural areas and lower 80s within the confines of the urbanized DFW Metroplex. South or southeast breezes near 10 mph will do little to quell the warm conditions going through sunrise Saturday morning. 05/ && .LONG TERM... /Issued 344 AM CDT Fri Aug 28 2020/ /Saturday Onward/ Triple-digit high temperatures will continue for most of North and Central Texas through the beginning of next week, but some relief is in store as rain chances and near-normal temperatures return by midweek. Very hot temperatures and humid conditions are expected on Saturday across the entire region. The high humidity coupled with high temperatures in the upper 90s across East Texas to near 106 across the Big Country will yield heat index values upwards of 106 degrees, possibly closer to 110-112 degrees for locales east of the I-35 corridor. Heat safety precautions should be taken, especially if outdoors during the day. Guidance continues to stall a weak cold front north of the Red River late Saturday afternoon. Shower and thunderstorm development is expected near this feature and some of this activity may reach our Red River counties Saturday night into Sunday morning. The heat will continue on Sunday, but the oppressive temperatures and heat indices should remain just below Heat Advisory criteria. Areas east of the I-35 corridor may observe heat indices near 105 degrees, but we’ll hold off on extending the current advisory for now since the coverage may be more sparse. Otherwise, diurnally-driven isolated shower/thunderstorms are possible near the weak boundary north of the Red River and across our southeastern counties Sunday afternoon. We’ll begin the work week with high temperatures in the upper 90s to near 101 degrees across most of the region, but relief is in store as rain chances increase on Tuesday and Wednesday and temperatures return to near or slightly below-normal for the beginning of September. An upper level trough will eject from the Rockies into the Plains on Tuesday, sending its attendant cold front toward North and Central Texas. Rich low level moisture and instability ahead of the front should result in increasing shower/thunderstorm chances across the region. Model guidance continues to struggle with the strength, location, and timing on this system, but the general consensus is the higher rain/storm chances will be across North Texas. There are indications of slightly cooler high temperatures (upper 80s to low 90s) across North Texas behind the front on Wednesday, but a quick warming trend into the mid to upper 90s is expected by the end of the week. Garcia && .AVIATION... /NEW/ /12z TAFs/ Concerns: Potential for isolated TS near Waco Regional this afternoon and early evening. VFR will prevail today across the D10 terminals and at Waco Regional with FEW-SCT Cu between 070-090 and some waves of mid- high clouds rotating across off the southwest edge of TD Laura. A mid level impulse will move progressively southward today and could provide enough lift for widely scattered showers and tstorms to re-develop across parts of Central Texas this afternoon and early evening. An isolated SHRA or TS could threaten Waco Regional late in the day, but my confidence remains too low at this time for any mention of VCTS or VCSH at this time. Convective trends will need to be monitored closely at Waco on the 15z, 18z, and 21z TAFs today. Though I do not expect any direct impacts at D10 terminals today, some slow down for Bonham and Cedar Creek cornerposts, as well as EB traffic is likely as TD Laura continues to impact the Mid MS Valley and western TN valley region today, as well as the low convective chances I mentioned above near Waco.
