Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fort Worth TX 521 AM CDT Wed Aug 12 2020 .SHORT TERM... /NEW/ Update: The only significant change since the previous discussion was to go ahead with the Heat Advisory, which is in effect from this afternoon through Thursday. There were only 2 counties in the CWA which were excluded from the advisory, Mills and Lampasas, where afternoon dewpoints should sufficiently mix to keep heat indices just below criteria. Isolated storms are still possible across the northeastern-most zones today. Modest deep layer shear which was in place yesterday is dwindling with the slow exit of the upper level system over the Arklatex, so threats associated with any storm which develops will likely be limited to frequent lightning and brief heavy rain. 30 Previous Discussion: /Through Thursday/ North and Central texas will remain beneath the eastern periphery of a strong ridge centered near El Paso. Hot conditions will be the primary and most widely felt result from this fairly common summer pattern. Meanwhile, a shortwave trough extending southwestward from an upper low centered over Missouri will continue to slowly move southeast through the Arklatex region. This feature continues to produce thunderstorms, which will occasionally affect areas northeast of the Metroplex through the overnight hours. Activity should fall apart Wednesday morning with the loss of a modest low level jet. Redevelopment this afternoon will be mainly east of the region as the upper level feature begins its exit to the east. However, some high-resolution guidance indicates one last wave of storms in the area, so will keep chance to slight chance POPs going across the northeast zones through the afternoon. The rest of the region will have to deal with triple-digit heat indices, with forecast values exceeding 105 across a good portion of the region over the next couple of afternoons. The only exceptions are the far northeast, where clouds and precip may keep temps down a few degrees, and the southwestern-most zones where dewpoints should mix out more efficiently each afternoon. Will be collaborating with neighbors over the next few hours about if and where a heat advisory might be needed, and have a decision made before daybreak. The other headache will be elevated fire danger west of I-35 where drying vegetation and hot, dry afternoons will only aggravate the ongoing conditions. One positive for Wednesday-Thursday is that it looks like winds will be a few MPH lower than the past couple of days. That being said, will likely issue another grass-fire danger statement due to min RH dropping to or below 30 percent and winds still topping 10 MPH. 30 && .LONG TERM... /Issued 311 AM CDT Wed Aug 12 2020/ /Thursday Night through Tuesday/ Little change to the extended forecast through the weekend as we appear to be entering the hottest stretch of summer so far. Strong subtropical ridging will remain centered just to our west but its sprawling eastward extent will keep us hot and dry through the weekend with ambient air temperatures climbing to between 100-105 degrees. The only discrepancies among the guidance continues to be the extent of afternoon boundary layer mixing and subsequent drop in dewpoints which directly impacts heat index values. As temperatures climb above 100 degrees, we usually see dewpoints drop into the low/mid 60s which will likely be the case Friday through Sunday. Areas east of I-35 may actually see dewpoints remain in the upper 60s and lower 70s and this will be where heat indices are highest. Either way, it'll be hot with heat advisories likely being extended into the weekend. There is still a consensus among the guidance with the center of the ridge axis shifting westward early next week and a weak front sliding southward in the Mon-Tue timeframe. This certainly won't bring significantly cooler air into the region, but the associated increase in cloud cover and drier air should provide some relief from the very hot weather. We'll continue to advertise some low rain chances Monday into Tuesday with the frontal boundary lingering around.
