Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 326 AM PDT Mon May 27 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Unseasonably cool and wet weather will continue across northern and central Nevada through Wednesday, with scattered to numerous showers along with isolated afternoon thunderstorms. Showers persist Thursday on into the weekend, however warmer temperatures later in the week will likely result in increased afternoon and early evening thunderstorm activity. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday. An upper level low currently centered over southern NV early this morning is leading to partly to mostly cloudy skies along with a few rain showers over portions of northern and central NV. Later this morning the low will drift east-northeast over Utah, which will in turn result in increased shower activity spreading into northeastern NV. This afternoon and into this evening as the low drifts further east, showers will expand in coverage over northern and central NV. Driest portions of the CWA today will be western areas such as Humboldt County, which are furthest from the exiting low. The eastern and central portions of the CWA will see periods of moderate to briefly heavy rainfall at times today, with many areas seeing a quarter inch to a half inch or more of rainfall by this evening. Isolated thunderstorms are possible again today. A little warmer on Tuesday as the low moves further off to the east, however below normal high temperatures continue, along with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorm activity. .LONG TERM...Tuesday night through next Sunday. Unsettled conditions are expected to last into the first week of June. A broad, cool trough of low pressure will envelop the western CONUS and multiple low pressure waves will drop south into the synoptic feature. The mean trough will have a slightly positive tilt most of the time, periodically bringing in colder air. Also, at times the trough axis will extend out over the Pacific to introduce new moisture to the arena. Snow or graupel will at times mix in with the general storminess. Showers and thunderstorms will continue for northern and central Nevada through Sunday. Daytime temperatures will be a little below normal most days. Overnight lows will generally be a little above normal for this time of year. && .AVIATION...Showers and thunderstorms today across northern and central Nevada. Thunderstorms, even in the vicinity of stations, could bring variable outflow wind gusts up to around 30 kt. Stronger cells could temporarily drop VIS to around 1SM in heavy rain. && .FIRE WEATHER...Cool and wet/damp conditions will continue this week which will keep fire weather concerns to a minimum. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible through Wednesday. Warmer temperatures over the latter half of the week may result in thunderstorm activity increasing to scattered coverage each afternoon and early evening from Thursday through Sunday. && .HYDROLOGY...High flows on rivers and creeks will continue across northern and central Nevada this week as the result of recent and expected additional rainfall. The Humboldt River has risen back up to around minor flood stage at Battle Mountain and Comus and is expected to remain there through midweek. Lander County Sheriff's office and members of the public (through Facebook) reported a cold air funnel one mile north of Argenta. Numerous photos confirm cold air funnel did not touch the ground.
Public saw a cold air funnel approximately 3 miles north of Emigrant Pass while driving eastbound on I-80. The cold air funnel did not touch down.
