Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 819 PM PDT Tue Mar 12 2019 .UPDATE...8pm PDT... The initial cold front push is making its way down through central Nevada this evening. Locations to the north like Tonopah, Desert Rock and Goldfield Summit have seen wind gusts as high as 40-50 mph as the northerly wind shift pushes through. The leading edge is just past Desert Rock at the moment and will make its way into the Las Vegas Valley on schedule around 10pm. Bishop, CA has already seen this northerly shift and that should continue down the Owens Valley through the evening as well. Although this initial push of northerly winds is packing some higher wind gusts, it is likely to die down some through the rest of tonight. Tomorrow morning will see a return of the higher gusts in the 30-40 mph range for most area. Also a concern tonight is the line of showers to the north of Vegas moving southeastward. We have seen a couple of lightning strikes in that line near Tonopah. Lincoln County will see the brunt of the activity as it progresses east. Expect brief moderate showers (snow showers at higher elevations) as it passes by. A few stray showers on the southern end of this line may reach into northern Clark County and possibly the northern Las Vegas Valley. This will need to be watched closely over the next few hours. Overall, the forecast appears on track. Only minor adjustments made this evening. && .SYNOPSIS...A cold front will bring strong northwest winds to much of the area tonight and Wednesday, along with colder temperatures and a brief round of showers. High pressure will then build in, bringing a period of dry weather with temperatures climbing above normal for the weekend into early next week. && .DISCUSSION...Tonight through next Tuesday. The immediate weather impact heading our way will be a blast of strong northwest winds gusting 40 to 50 mph behind a cold front that will sweep across our region tonight followed by sustained strong north winds Wednesday. The cold front was pushing down through northwest Nevada early this afternoon and will accelerate as it heads across southern Nevada between 10 PM and midnight. High res models are all in good agreement with a quicker arrival of the front over southern Nevada and the Wind Advisory now goes into effect at 10 PM for the Las Vegas Valley and for zones to the south and east. High res models and MOS Guidance values have toned down the indication of potential high winds (sustained 40 mph with gusts over 58 mph) near Barstow-Daggett this evening, so will keep the Wind Advisory for the Western Mojave Desert as is. Sometimes with fast moving fronts, local gusts over 58 mph can occur directly with the frontal passage. We will have to watch for this possibility, but confidence is low in pinpointing locations. In addition, brief showers will accompany the front, primarily across southern Nevada into northwest Arizona. Snow levels will quickly drop to around 4500 feet in the band of showers, but moisture is limited and rapid clearing will occur behind the the front as it progresses to the southeast. A deep strong northerly flow will occur on the back side of the front as its associated upper level trough merges with the closed low lifting up over the southern Rockies. This will keep widespread sustained north winds of 25 to 35 mph over much of our forecast area Wednesday with gusts 40 to 50 mph. Winds will gradually decrease Wednesday evening and overnight. Thursday through Tuesday will bring a period of generally benign weather as a mean ridge of high pressure builds over the western states. A couple weak circulations are forecast to undercut the ridge and move across southern California and southern Arizona Friday and then again Sunday. However, these weak systems should not produce much in the way of sensible weather and temperatures will be on the upward trend, especially from Saturday through early next week. && .AVIATION...A front will move south across the airfield tonight and shift winds to the northwest, with a shift occurring between 05z-07z. Wind speeds between 20-30 knots with gusts up to 40 knots possible. Along with the frontal passage, a brief period of shower activity bringing CIGs to 7-10 kft is expected between 06z- 09z. Skies are expected to clear predawn Wednesday. Strong north gusts will continue through Wednesday afternoon then diminish during the evening. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Shower activity will continue to rotate through Northwest Arizona and down the Colorado River valley through the afternoon and diminishing this evening as low pressure moves east. A potent cold front will move south across the region tonight and bring gusty north winds to all sites by Wednesday morning; wind speeds between 20-30 knots with gusts 30-45 knots expected. A brief period of shower activity and CIGs between 6-10 kft are expected with the front. Skies expected to clear rapidly behind the front.
